Kerala University's proposed apprenticeship programme aims to integrate hands-on workplace training into the final stages of undergraduate education.

Bridging Academia and Industry

The University of Kerala has taken proactive steps to introduce a comprehensive six-month paid apprenticeship programme tailored for eligible students enrolled in the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). Designed to enhance practical workplace readiness, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical classroom instruction and professional industry standards.

The proposed framework is structured under the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), operating in close collaboration with the Board of Apprenticeship Training (Southern Region) under the Union Ministry of Education. While the blueprint has been drawn, final implementation remains contingent upon formal approval from the university's Academic Council and the completion of necessary administrative formalities.

Tiered Stipend Structure

Under the proposed guidelines, participating students will receive a monthly stipend funded according to their specific educational qualifications and program tracks. The university has outlined the following financial support structure:

- Bachelor's Degree and BTech Holders: Rs 12,300 per month - Diploma Holders and Active Diploma Students: Rs 10,900 per month - Vocational Degree Programme Students: Rs 9,600 per month

This tiered remuneration is intended to provide financial backing while students apply their academic training within functioning professional environments.

Implementation Plan and Phased Rollout

In its initial phase, the apprenticeship scheme will target eligible sixth-semester FYUGP students currently enrolled in the university's internal departments. Following a successful initial rollout, university authorities intend to progressively expand the programme to encompass affiliated colleges in subsequent phases.

Daily News 365 understands that the initiative seeks to expose undergraduates to authentic corporate workflows, diverse organizational cultures, and government sector operations. By fostering these early industry connections, the institution aims to elevate the employability quotient of its graduating cohorts, transforming traditional higher education into a more career-driven trajectory.
