Odisha Government Refunds Rs 69.23 Crore in Admission Fees to 1.11 Lakh Students Under Free Education Initiative
The Odisha government has successfully transferred Rs 69.23 crore directly to the bank accounts of 1.11 lakh college students under the Gyanodaya scheme.

Direct Benefit Transfer Executed
In a major relief to thousands of families, the Odisha government has successfully refunded Rs 69.23 crore in college admission fees to 1.11 lakh students. The financial disbursement comes under the ambitious Gyanodaya - Shiksha Ru Samruddhi scheme, widely recognized as the KG to PG Free Education Scheme.
According to senior officials from the Higher Education Department, the funds have been credited directly into the bank accounts of eligible degree college students across the state.
Implementation Details and Corrective Measures
The free education initiative officially commenced with the 2026-27 academic session. However, because the institutional admission cycle had already concluded prior to the rollout of the policy, students had initially paid their respective admission fees out of pocket. To honor the mandate of the new scheme, the state administration promptly initiated a comprehensive reimbursement process.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj has urged enrolled students to verify their bank statements to confirm the receipt of the refund. Addressing concerns regarding students who may experience transaction failures or outdated banking information, the minister announced that a dedicated portal link will soon go live.
"A correction facility will be integrated into the Student Academic Management System (SAMS) student login portal," officials stated. This interface will allow students to update or rectify their banking credentials seamlessly, ensuring that no eligible candidate misses out on the financial relief.
Easing the Financial Burden of Higher Education
The Gyanodaya - Shiksha Ru Samruddhi scheme is structured to provide entirely free education spanning from the kindergarten level up to postgraduate studies for eligible youth in the state.
The framework covers regular undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) candidates enrolled across state public universities, government-run institutions, and government-aided private colleges throughout Odisha.
Education analysts note that this policy marks a significant step toward making higher education more accessible. By absorbing foundational academic costs, the state government aims to substantially alleviate the financial strain traditionally shouldered by students and their families during college admissions.
