Microsoft Unveils Voluntary Buyout Program for 60,000 Employees Globally
Microsoft has launched a voluntary exit program affecting approximately 60,000 employees across four countries, including India, following earlier workforce reductions.

Global Restructuring at Microsoft
Technology giant Microsoft has announced a voluntary buyout programme targeting approximately 60,000 employees across four major markets: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and India. The strategic initiative follows a previous round of layoffs that saw 4,800 workers depart in July 2026, marking a continued adjustment in the company's operational structure.
The Voluntary Exit Offer (VEO) provides eligible personnel the option to leave the organization with financial compensation alongside dedicated career transition support. According to corporate communications, the move is designed to offer professional flexibility while aligning internal resources with shifting business priorities.
Eligibility Criteria and Departmental Scope
Under the official guidelines, the buyout applies to employees at internal level 70 and below. However, participation is contingent upon whether an individual's specific business division is included in the program.
Divisions covered under the VEO include: - Copilot and AI Experiences - Windows + Devices - Xbox - Finance - Human Resources
Conversely, several departments remain excluded from the current offering, notably sales, marketing, commercial business, and security teams. Unlike previous corporate retirement initiatives, this program carries no minimum age or tenure requirements, nor is employee performance factored into eligibility determinations.
Severance Packages and Regional Calculations
Compensation structures vary based on geographic location, base salary, seniority, and cumulative years of service.
In the United States, workers at level 64 and below are slated to receive one week of base salary for every six months of continuous service. Personnel at levels 65 through 67 are eligible for two weeks of salary for the same timeframe, with severance generally capped at 39 weeks.
For employees based in India, the package comprises one month of base salary for each completed year of service, supplemented by health insurance coverage and professional career transition assistance. For instance, an employee drawing a monthly base salary of Rs 2 lakh with ten years of tenure could potentially receive approximately Rs 20 lakh in severance.
Timelines and Future Outlook
Eligible Indian employees have until December 1, 2026, to make their decisions, with departures scheduled to conclude by the end of December. Individual offer details are being dispatched directly to eligible personnel via corporate communication channels.
Chief People Officer Amy Coleman emphasized that the program provides workforce flexibility while allowing the enterprise to adapt to evolving industry demands. Industry analysts note that while 60,000 represents the total pool of eligible workers rather than guaranteed terminations, management has not ruled out future structural adjustments depending on market conditions.
