Critical Condition Following Police Encounter
AMARAVATI — The 21-year-old accused of a brutal chainsaw attack on two schoolgirls in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district is now battling for his life. The suspect, identified as Hemanth, sustained multiple bullet injuries during a police operation and faces the potential amputation of his leg due to permanent vascular and tissue damage.
According to Anantapur Superintendent of Police P. Jagadeesh, the accused was shot in the lower extremities after he allegedly resisted arrest and attacked a police team with a knife, injuring a Circle Inspector. Law enforcement officials discharged approximately six rounds to subdue the suspect during the confrontation.
Hemanth was immediately rushed to the Government General Hospital in Anantapur, where he remains under heavy guard in the intensive care unit. While medical authorities have indicated severe trauma to the lower body, an official confirmation regarding the permanent removal of the limb is expected as his treatment progresses.
Brutal Attack on Schoolgirls
The violent episode unfolded on October 31, when Hemanth ambushed two Class 10 students with a chainsaw in Anantapur district. The unprovoked assault left both minors with grievous injuries.
One of the victims, a 15-year-old girl who attempted to protect her classmate, suffered catastrophic trauma, including the traumatic amputation of her right hand, severe lacerations to her face and neck, and multiple fractures. Due to the critical nature of her injuries, she was transferred via a specially arranged medical green corridor to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru for specialized surgical intervention.
Official Response and Medical Prognosis
State Education Minister Nara Lokesh visited the injured teenager in Bengaluru to review her medical status. Medical teams have completed several extensive reconstructive and orthopedic procedures, reporting that her current vital signs are stable. However, treating physicians have cautioned that the next 48 hours remain critically important for her recovery.
The second victim, who sustained injuries while attempting to intervene and save her classmate, has also received necessary medical treatment and is currently recovering under observation.
