Incident Details and Police Operations

A 23-year-old man accused of raping and murdering a 17-year-old girl in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district was killed in a police encounter during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. According to law enforcement sources, the suspect, identified as Prahlad Das, was taken to the crime scene at Gaighata for an evidence reconstruction exercise following his arrest.

Police stated that Das managed to snatch a service revolver from an escorting officer and opened fire on the personnel. Officers retaliated in self-defense, leaving the accused seriously injured. Das was promptly transported to Chandpara Rural Hospital, where attending physicians pronounced him dead upon arrival. His remains were subsequently dispatched for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities confirmed that no police personnel sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. An internal probe has been initiated to examine the precise circumstances that allowed the suspect to seize an officer's firearm.

Following the announcement of Das's death, family members gathered at the hospital, expressing outrage and creating a volatile situation. A heavy police contingent was subsequently deployed at the medical facility and surrounding areas to maintain public order.

Pattern of Encounters in West Bengal

This incident marks the second such occurrence in West Bengal within a three-month span involving the death of a rape and murder suspect during a crime scene reconstruction.

In July, Pravas Mondal—identified as a prime suspect in the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in the South 24 Parganas district—was similarly killed in police firing. Police stated at the time that Mondal had attempted to escape by snatching an officer's weapon before being neutralized.

Reactions from Family and Officials

The parents of the 17-year-old victim expressed support for the police action, emphasizing the gravity of the crime. The victim's mother stated that the suspect's death brought a sense of closure regarding the perpetrator. The victim's father remarked that while nothing could return his daughter to him, the actions taken by authorities under the circumstances were justified.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh defended the police response, asserting that individuals who challenge the law must face severe consequences. He maintained that decisive law enforcement actions are necessary to uphold public safety and restore confidence in the justice system.
