Severe Cyclonic Storm Threatens Coastal Andhra Pradesh

As the very severe cyclonic storm 'Arnab' barrels across the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Andhra Pradesh. The storm is forecast to cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near Yanam, packing maximum sustained winds of 125-135 kmph gusting up to 150 kmph.

According to the latest IMD bulletins, the system moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 18 kmph over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal. By midday, its center was tracked approximately 140 kilometers southeast of Kakinada and 170 kilometers south of Visakhapatnam, prompting immediate and widespread disaster response preparations across vulnerable districts.

Immediate Ground Impact and District-Level Disruptions

Coastal districts have already begun experiencing the severe meteorological fallout of the advancing storm. Heavy downpours and fierce squalls lashed Visakhapatnam, uprooting numerous trees and electric poles. In the port city's MVP Sector 3, falling trees crushed several vehicles, while inundation was reported in the Old Gajuwaka area.

In Konaseema and Kakinada, towering sea waves breached sand barriers, spilling seawater onto coastal roadways. Local authorities swiftly evacuated fishermen and vulnerable residents from low-lying coastal pockets to designated safety shelters.

Kakinada Collector Harindhira Prasad and Superintendent of Police Bindu Madhav conducted ground evaluations in Talarevu, overseeing emergency responses as relentless downpours battered the district.

High-Level Government Review and Evacuation Orders

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a high-level emergency teleconference with collectors from all coastal districts. He directed officials to prioritize zero casualties and ensure swift power restoration mechanisms are deployed immediately after the storm passes.

The Chief Minister specifically ordered the unhindered stocking of food, clean drinking water, and medical essentials in all relief camps. Furthermore, he mandated the full deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams to execute real-time field monitoring through district control rooms.

Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) Managing Director Prakhar Jain emphasized that East Godavari, West Godavari, Kakinada, Konaseema, and Anakapalli districts remain highly vulnerable to heavy to torrential rainfall. Officials have reiterated urgent advisories for residents living in vulnerable structures and temporary sheds to relocate to designated rehabilitation centers immediately.
