Guwahati Hotel Shooting: Five Dead in Lease Dispute Execution, Accused Arrested
Five people were killed and one injured in a tragic shooting at a Guwahati hotel following a violent escalation over a property lease dispute.

Tragedy Strikes Lachit Nagar
GUWAHATI — A horrific late-night shooting at a hotel in Guwahati's Lachit Nagar has left five people dead and one seriously injured, sending shockwaves across Assam. The violent confrontation erupted during a meeting convened to resolve an ongoing financial and operational dispute over the property's lease.
According to the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, local authorities received distress calls regarding gunfire at Hotel Bilas Inn at approximately 9:00 PM. Responding officers arrived to find a gruesome scene in the hotel's reception area, where four victims were pronounced dead. Two others were discovered with critical gunshot wounds on the approach road.
Emergency responders rushed the injured to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). While one victim succumbed to injuries shortly after arrival, another remains under intensive medical care.
Victims Identified
Investigators have formally identified the deceased as 65-year-old Bhudev Bharali, Helena Bharali (58), Debarshi Kashyap (39), Rinika Kashyap (30), and 48-year-old Narayan Das. The surviving victim undergoing treatment has been identified as Satyendra Pathak (43).
Local authorities confirmed that Helena Bharali, Debarshi Kashyap, and Rinika Kashyap were residents of Guwahati's Nabin Nagar neighborhood, while Bhudev Bharali and Narayan Das hailed from Barpeta district.
The Dispute: Lease Terms and Renovations
Police investigations point to a bitter commercial disagreement as the catalyst for the massacre. The primary suspect, identified as 34-year-old Ghanakanta Gogoi, had entered into a five-year lease agreement for the hotel with its owners on September 10 of the previous year, with a monthly rent fixed at approximately Rs 1.8 lakh.
Preliminary findings indicate that Gogoi had operated the hotel for roughly a year, sinking an estimated Rs 35 lakh into extensive renovations. Tensions mounted as the property owners pushed for Gogoi to vacate the premises, while Gogoi demanded financial restitution for his substantial capital investments.
A formal meeting was scheduled at the hotel on Monday evening to negotiate a settlement. However, witnesses and preliminary police accounts suggest that a verbal argument quickly degenerated into a violent physical altercation before Gogoi allegedly drew a firearm and opened indiscriminate fire.
Swift Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement launched an immediate manhunt following the incident. Within an hour, special teams traced Gogoi to the Basistha Police Station area, successfully placing him under arrest and seizing the .32-calibre pistol allegedly used in the attack.
Forensic experts from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) combed the hotel lobby, recovering multiple empty cartridge cases and live rounds. Investigators are also probing Gogoi's background, noting that he hails originally from Naharkatia in the Dibrugarh district and had previously resided in Guwahati's Sawkuchi area.
Furthermore, police sources revealed that Gogoi has a history of pending legal cases across various jurisdictions in Assam, predominantly related to fraud and brandishing of weapons. Authorities are currently reviewing his background, including unverified historical associations with law enforcement agencies, as the probe continues to unfold.
