Call for Voluntary Subsidy Surrender

In a notable push for fiscal responsibility and state development, the Bihar government has appealed to financially well-off citizens and income-tax payers to voluntarily surrender their state-provided electricity subsidies. The call was issued during a public address at a major youth forum in the state capital.

Addressing the two-day 'Pataliputra National Youth Parliament-2.0', officials highlighted the heavy financial burden of energy subsidies on the state exchequer. The administration currently spends approximately Rs 23,000 crore annually to subsidize power, translating to an expenditure of Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per household.

While the current policy extends 125 units of free electricity to consumers across all economic brackets, authorities have urged affluent residents to opt out of the benefit to redirect public funds toward critical infrastructure and developmental projects.

Emphasizing Democratic Values and Youth Engagement

Beyond fiscal policy, the forum served as a platform to underscore the pivotal role of younger generations in strengthening democratic institutions and fostering a developed nation. Officials drew parallels to historical milestones, including the 1974 movement, urging contemporary generations—spanning Gen Z and Gen Alpha—to take an active interest in governance, constitutional values, and civic duties.

Emphasizing that quality education forms the cornerstone of societal progress, the administration advocated for the annual hosting of youth parliaments to bridge the gap between young citizens and legislative processes.

The event drew several key dignitaries, including cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, and organizers dedicated to fostering youth leadership in public affairs.
