Cyclone Arnab Sparks Political Firestorm in Andhra Pradesh as YSRCP Targets Naidu Government Over Relief Delays
Political tensions soar in Andhra Pradesh as YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy accuses the state government of delaying cyclone relief for farmers.

Political Aftermath of Cyclone Arnab
Even as Cyclone Arnab weakened after crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast, it has left behind a severe political tempest. The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led NDA government is facing intense scrutiny from the opposition Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) over the pace and efficacy of agricultural relief measures.
Addressing regional coordinators and district presidents via a video conference, YSRCP president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's administration. Reddy alleged that the government was prioritizing political publicity over tangible assistance for farmers grappling with devastating crop losses.
Scale of Agricultural Devastation
Preliminary damage assessments paint a grim picture for the state's agrarian sector. According to opposition figures, nearly 12 lakh acres of crops have suffered severe damage, with paddy, coconut, banana, and aquaculture farmers bearing the brunt in regions such as Konaseema, the Godavari districts, and Anakapalli.
Official government estimates also reflect widespread destruction. State Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu reported preliminary crop losses spanning approximately 3.51 lakh hectares, prompting the state administration to seek emergency financial assistance from the Central government.
However, the opposition has questioned the government's dependence on the Real Time Governance System (RTGS) for assessing losses, arguing that digital reviews cannot replace physical inspections of affected fields.
Subsidy Backlog and Financial Distress
Friction has further escalated over pending financial assistance. Reddy claimed that nearly Rs. 600 crore in input subsidies related to the previous Cyclone Montha remains unpaid. Furthermore, he criticized the implementation of the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme, alleging that the government has disbursed only Rs. 19,000 out of the promised Rs. 60,000 over three years, leaving a significant shortfall of Rs. 41,000 per beneficiary.
Electoral Concerns and Local-Body Polls
With local-body elections fast approaching, the political confrontation has spilled over into the electoral arena. The State Election Commission has scheduled urban local-body polling for November 1 and MPTC-ZPTC elections for November 5, following directions from the Supreme Court.
In light of these upcoming polls, YSRCP leadership has issued strict directives to party cadres to document alleged intimidation, forced nomination withdrawals, and irregularities. Particular concern was raised regarding the Pulivendula constituency, where the opposition demanded enhanced security measures, including CCTV surveillance and live webcasting at polling booths to ensure a transparent electoral process.
