Breakthrough in a Two-Decade-Old Cold Case

Law enforcement authorities in the national capital have apprehended a 62-year-old fugitive who had been evading justice for over 26 years in connection with a cold-case murder. The arrest marks a significant closure to an investigation that initially began as a routine traffic accident inquiry before uncovering a calculated homicide.

According to senior police officials, the accused, identified as Vishwanath Singh, alias Munna, was apprehended in northeast Delhi's Shiv Vihar neighborhood following a strategic tip-off.

From Traffic Accident to Premeditated Murder

The origins of the case trace back to October 20, 1998. Emergency responders discovered 24-year-old Jai Prakash unconscious and severely injured in the Gokalpuri sector. Prakash succumbed to his injuries during medical treatment without ever regaining consciousness.

In the immediate aftermath, the incident was cataloged as a fatal road accident, and a formal case was registered under relevant sections concerning death by negligence at the local police station. However, subsequent forensic evaluations and deeper investigative work revealed a sinister reality: the collision was entirely staged.

Investigators established that Singh, who lived as a neighbour to the victim, allegedly bludgeoned Prakash on the head with a heavy hammer. He then transported and positioned the body to fabricate a convincing hit-and-run scene.

Motive and Decades of Evasion

Police uncovered that the violent attack was motivated by deep-seated suspicion. Singh allegedly believed that Prakash was maintaining an illicit romantic relationship with his wife.

Following the transformation of the case from a vehicular accident to a premeditated murder investigation, a fresh First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Khajoori Khas police station in 2000. By December 2001, judicial authorities officially declared Singh a proclaimed offender as he vanished from his known addresses.

For more than two decades, Singh successfully concealed his identity. Moving fluidly across various regions—including Faridabad, Loni, his native Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh, and multiple locations across Delhi—he sustained himself by working within the wholesale 'mawa' (condensed milk) trade.

The Surveillance Operation

A specialized Crime Branch unit ultimately cracked the case by tracking his familial roots back to Etawah. By establishing meticulous physical surveillance on Singh's relatives in Delhi, operatives identified an aging man who covertly maintained contact with the suspect's brothers. Discreet verification confirmed his true identity, leading to the successful raid and apprehension.

Authorities have confirmed that Singh is currently undergoing comprehensive interrogation as legal proceedings advance toward a formal trial.
