Investigation Sparked by Instagram Ad Scam

What began as a routine online shopping grievance by a Delhi University student has snowballed into the unearthing of a sprawling national cyber fraud syndicate. Delhi Police have dismantled an organized cybercrime network involved in illicit transactions exceeding Rs 30 crore, arresting seven individuals in connection with the scam.

The breakthrough came after Fatima, a student at Ramjas College and a resident of Prayagraj, fell victim to an online retail trap orchestrated through an Instagram shopping page named 'Kavya_kurti_hub'. Seeking to purchase a kurti advertised on the platform, she was redirected to WhatsApp, where she placed an order worth Rs 799 and paid a Rs 400 advance via a QR code.

The Escalating Extortion Trap

According to police records, the ordeal escalated when the victim received a phone call regarding the delivery of her parcel, which required a passcode to release. Under the pretext of generating the code and executing a refundable security charge, the fraudsters manipulated her into making multiple subsequent money transfers totaling Rs 1,150, Rs 2,000, Rs 2,650, and Rs 650.

Realizing she had been swindled out of Rs 6,450 after receiving neither the product nor a refund, the student formally registered a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP). This triggered an official First Information Report (FIR) at the Cyber Police Station in North District on September 4.

Technical Surveillance and Coordinated Raids

Deploying advanced digital forensics, investigators analyzed approximately 200 mobile numbers, IMEI identities, banking ledgers, and digital footprints secured from e-commerce and logistics platforms including Flipkart, Zomato, and Blue Dart.

Financial tracking traced the siphoned funds through Pine Labs Merchant gateways directly to a Canara Bank account associated with Kizentech Solutions Pvt. Ltd., based in Greater Noida.

Following intense technical surveillance, law enforcement executed coordinated raids in Greater Noida on October 16, apprehending six suspects: Aditya Mishra, Ayush Verma, Abhishek Pal, Himanshu Rana, Rahul Kumar, and Gaurav Pandey. A seventh suspect, Udit Pratap Singh Bhadauriya, was subsequently tracked down and arrested in Kanpur on October 21.

Unraveling the Syndicate's Operations

Interrogations revealed that the syndicate systematically established fictitious firms and opened current bank accounts, supplying them to higher-level operatives in exchange for monthly retainers and financial commissions. Notably, Gaurav Pandey, an MBA graduate, allegedly spearheaded the logistics of acquiring and supplying these mule accounts to the cyber criminals.

Authorities have successfully linked the syndicate to at least 27 separate cyber fraud complaints originating across multiple Indian states. Approximately 25 bank accounts, opened under fake corporate entities and dummy names, were utilized to launder the proceeds of the cybercrimes.

During the raids, police seized a substantial cache of incriminating evidence, including:

* 20 mobile phones and 45 active SIM cards * 39 point-of-sale (POS) machines * 33 debit cards and 28 cheque books * 15 digital scanners and two laptops * 5 official stamps, 7 Aadhaar cards, 5 PAN cards, and 21 assorted bank documents

The high-stakes operation was executed by a dedicated cyber cell team led by Sub-Inspector Arvind Yadav, operating under the direct supervision of senior North District police officials. Law enforcement agencies confirmed that comprehensive follow-up investigations are currently underway to map the remainder of the network and establish deeper connections to pending cyber fraud cases nationwide.
