Swift Action in Shahdara

In a textbook example of modern cyber-forensics aiding field policing, the Delhi Police successfully rescued a 13-year-old boy and apprehended his kidnapper within a mere three hours of the initial distress call. The breakthrough came after investigators used a strategic Rs 5,000 UPI digital transfer as a tracking mechanism to locate the suspect.

The sequence of events unfolded on October 30 when a distressed mother approached the Jyoti Nagar police station in the Shahdara district. She reported that her son had stepped out of their home to purchase daily essentials but failed to return. Shortly after filing the report, she received an extortion call from an unknown individual demanding a ransom of Rs 40,000 for the safe release of her child.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, law enforcement officials immediately registered a formal case and formed a dedicated tactical team to trace the child and neutralize the threat.

The Digital Breadcrumb

As the investigation progressed, the kidnapper made subsequent contact with the family, insisting that the ransom be paid digitally via UPI. The suspect provided a digital barcode to facilitate the transfer.

Utilizing tactical policing methods, investigators funded an initial test transaction of Rs 5,000 using an officer's personal account to monitor the exact digital footprint. Technical surveillance swiftly directed the cyber cell team to a local cybercafe situated in the Karawal Nagar area.

Upon interviewing the cybercafe proprietor, police uncovered that a man accompanied by a minor had utilized the store's UPI barcode to receive the Rs 5,000 in exchange for a nominal commission of Rs 50. Security camera footage from the establishment was quickly reviewed, allowing the victim's mother to positively identify her missing son.

The Trap and Arrest

Equipped with visual confirmation and transaction data, the police orchestrated a second Rs 5,000 transfer through the same barcode to lure the suspect back to the location.

The strategy succeeded when the accused returned to the cybercafe alongside the victim to collect the cash payout. Backed by the cafe owner, the waiting police team swiftly intervened, apprehending the suspect and securing the unconditional release of the teenager.

During subsequent interrogations, the accused—identified as Akash, who worked as a delivery helper in the Sadar Bazar area—admitted to knowing the victim through a mutual family connection. Police established that Akash had lured the boy onto his scooter before initiating the ransom calls.

Authorities have successfully recovered the Rs 5,000 in cash, the mobile phone utilized for the extortion calls, and the scooter involved in the abduction. While the accused reportedly has no prior criminal record, investigators are continuing inquiries to determine whether he acted alone or with accomplices. The rescued minor has since been safely reunited with his family.
