Last-Ditch Appeal to Congress Leadership

With just a day remaining before the planned opposition rally at New Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has made a final, urgent appeal to Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The traders' body is seeking her direct intervention to have the INDIA bloc's November 1 gathering postponed until after the Diwali festival, following failed attempts to secure a rescheduling from Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.

Organizers anticipate a massive turnout of up to 10 lakh people for the mega-rally. According to CTI estimates, the event is projected to draw between 15,000 and 20,000 buses, alongside numerous private vehicles carrying political figures and supporters. Trade representatives warn that this heavy influx of traffic will paralyze major thoroughfares surrounding the historic market districts.

"We appealed to Rahul Gandhi, but he refused. Now our last hope is Sonia Gandhi," said CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal. He emphasized that the mercantile community is not taking a political stance against the protest itself, but is strictly concerned with safeguarding commercial viability during the peak shopping season.

The Economic Impact on Historic Markets

The timing of the rally coincides with a critical window for retail and wholesale commerce in the national capital. With Dhanteras falling on November 6 and Diwali on November 8, November 1 represents one of the busiest preparation days of the year for local merchants.

CTI reports that roughly 20 major wholesale and retail hubs are located within a five-kilometre radius of Ramlila Maidan. These include prominent commercial centres such as:

- Chandni Chowk - Sadar Bazar - Connaught Place - Khari Baoli - Bhagirath Palace - Chawri Bazar - Kashmere Gate - Karol Bagh - Daryaganj

These districts supply goods nationwide, handling approximately 5,000 incoming trucks and tempos daily from industrial zones, as well as another 3,000 outbound vehicles destined for National Capital Region (NCR) cities and neighboring states. Traders estimate that a complete gridlock could jeopardize daily business turnovers ranging between Rs 10,000 crore and Rs 12,000 crore.

"We are not opposing the rally. We are pleading with folded hands to save our livelihoods during the peak Diwali season," Goyal reiterated.

Infrastructure and Parking Concerns

Beyond economic losses, the trade association has raised severe logistical concerns regarding crowd and traffic management around the venue. CTI officials point out that Ramlila Maidan lacks adequate parking infrastructure to accommodate hundreds of large buses, let alone the tens of thousands of expected vehicles.

Consequently, transport is expected to overflow onto vital arterial routes, including Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Netaji Subhash Marg, and surrounding market access points. CTI warns that disruptions could cascade early, beginning as early as October 31 as transport convoys begin arriving from peripheral entry points such as Singhu.

While the political opposition moves forward with its mobilization plans, the business community remains anxious, hoping for a late administrative or political shift that averts a commercial standstill during Delhi's most lucrative fortnight of the year.
