Shifting Focus from Memorization to Understanding

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has delivered a sharp critique of the contemporary Indian education landscape, asserting that both the academic apparatus and anxious parents have become gripped by a "marks-wadi" mindset. Speaking at the inauguration of the Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) new Experience Centre in Dwarka, the minister emphasized the urgent need to dismantle rote learning in favor of experiential frameworks.

Joshi noted that a disproportionate amount of a student's formative years is currently consumed by memorization tactics and strategic planning aimed solely at maximizing exam scores. He argued that this relentless fixation compromises genuine intellectual growth.

"Much of a student's time goes into memorising and planning how to score marks. Parents, too, often feel the marks must be scored somehow. I often say that people have become a different kind of 'marks-wadi'," Joshi stated during his address. "The cost is that a child's understanding, learning capacity and interests go unexamined."

The Real-World Application Deficit

The minister warned that the intense pressure to secure high percentages not only erodes student confidence but also produces an educational outcome where theoretical knowledge remains trapped in textbooks. When students are unable to apply classroom concepts to practical, real-world scenarios, the core purpose of schooling is undermined, he added.

This structural critique forms the foundational philosophy behind the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which seeks to transition the country's pedagogy away from mechanical memorization and toward skill-building, critical thinking, and practical engagement.

Inside the New CBSE Experience Centre

Following his address, Joshi inaugurated the newly established CBSE Experience Centre, situated within the board's integrated office complex in Dwarka. Spanning 6,000 square feet, the facility is designed to showcase the historical evolution of education in India.

The interactive center features 12 broad zones and 21 distinct exhibits, mapping the trajectory of the country's school education system from ancient pedagogical traditions to modern learning methodologies and emerging career pathways.

A dedicated archive section offers visitors a rare glimpse into the historical roots of the board, displaying archival records dating back to 1935 alongside vintage photographs that trace the institutional growth of Indian secondary education.
