Five Killed in Manipur Violence as Protests Erupt in Kangpokpi and Noney Districts
Fresh violence grips Manipur as five people are killed across Kangpokpi and Noney districts, triggering intense protests and shutdowns.

Escalating Tensions in Manipur
Manipur has been plunged into a fresh cycle of violence following the recovery of two bodies in the Kangpokpi district and a separate deadly shootout in Noney district, bringing the death toll to five within a span of 48 hours. The incidents have ignited widespread outrage, leading to intense protests, roadblocks, and a total shutdown called by tribal bodies.
Clashes erupted in Kangpokpi on Sunday after security forces recovered the bodies of two missing Kuki men, identified as 20-year-old Paoginlal Hangsing and 20-year-old Tinginlun Chongloi. The two youths had gone missing from Taphou Kuki village on October 28, prompting the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, to initiate a district-wide shutdown.
Joint Security Operations and Public Outrage
The bodies were discovered during an extensive joint search operation conducted by the Manipur Police, Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Assam Rifles, and the Rapid Action Force (RAF). The teams combed the area east of National Highway-2 along SP Road before locating the remains.
Upon being transferred to the Kangpokpi District Hospital and subsequently to the Superintendent of Police's office, large crowds of angry demonstrators gathered to demand immediate accountability. The situation rapidly deteriorated, forcing security personnel to deploy tear gas shells to disperse the protesting crowds. Demonstrators also blocked National Highway-2, while local business establishments and private institutions remained shuttered.
CoTU has announced that it will refuse to claim the bodies of the two youths until the state government fulfills a stringent charter of demands, which includes the immediate removal of Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho. The tribal body stated that an earlier extension of the shutdown was made in good faith, expecting political intervention to secure the safe release of the abducted men.
Separate Gunfire Incident in Noney District
In a parallel incident a day prior, three Kuki men were killed in an intense exchange of gunfire between two unidentified armed groups at Kekru Naga village in Noney district. The clash occurred approximately eight kilometres from the Nungba Police Station. Authorities have confirmed the fatalities, though the identities of the armed factions and the precise catalyst for the firefight remain under active investigation.
Senior law enforcement officials stated that comprehensive combing and search operations are currently underway across both districts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence. Security forces remain on high alert as civil administration attempts to de-escalate mounting communal tensions across the region.
