Kerala Government to Challenge Anticipatory Bail for Judge and Minor Son in Fatal Mercedes Hit-and-Run
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala announced the government will challenge the anticipatory bail granted to a sitting judge and his minor son following a fatal hit-and-run incident.

Government Vows Legal Pushback in Fatal Collision
The Kerala government has announced its intention to approach a higher court to challenge the anticipatory bail granted to a District and Sessions court judge and his minor son. The legal action stems from a tragic hit-and-run incident in Kochi that claimed the life of 55-year-old Jayabalakrishnan.
Speaking to Daily News 365, Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala stated that the state administration stands firmly with the victim's family and will pursue the matter to the highest legal standard.
"As far as I am concerned, the government is concerned, we are totally with the family, and we will fight to the last," Chennithala affirmed. While acknowledging the separation of powers and the autonomy of the judiciary, he emphasized that state prosecutors are aggressively pursuing the case to ensure accountability.
Controversial Circumstances and Police Scrutiny
The fatal collision occurred early Sunday morning when Jayabalakrishnan, a resident of South Chittoor in Cheranalloor, was struck and killed instantly. The luxury vehicle involved was registered under the name of a judicial officer currently serving in Irinjalakuda, Thrissur, and was reportedly driven by his 17-year-old son.
The case has drawn intense public scrutiny and sharp criticism over the initial handling by local law enforcement. Home Minister Chennithala openly criticized the initial police response at the Ernakulam station, prompting the state government to transfer the Kochi police chief and initiate disciplinary proceedings against officers suspected of evidence tampering and complicity.
Defense Arguments and Legal Battles
During the initial hearings, the judge secured pre-arrest bail after arguing that his son had taken the vehicle without permission and had allegedly learned to drive via online video tutorials. However, investigators noted that the teenager's social media accounts—which were subsequently scrubbed—contained high-speed driving footage.
In granting anticipatory bail, the Kerala High Court noted that the judicial officer had already undergone extensive interrogation and would cooperate with ongoing inquiries. Despite this ruling, the victim’s family has continuously alleged preferential treatment due to the father's judicial position.
With the state government escalating the matter to a higher court, the investigation enters a critical phase as authorities attempt to overturn the bail orders and address systemic flaws exposed during the early stages of the probe.
