Compassion Behind Bars: Lalitpur Jail Authorities Help Women Inmates Celebrate Karwa Chauth
Five women prisoners at Lalitpur District Jail observed Karwa Chauth traditions with special administrative support, utilizing video calls and physical meetings.

Reform and Tradition in Custody
In a compassionate initiative highlighting the rehabilitative approach of correctional facilities, five women inmates at the Lalitpur District Jail in Uttar Pradesh successfully observed the traditional Karwa Chauth festival. Despite being confined behind bars, the prisoners were provided with essential items and special arrangements to perform their prayers and break their fasts after moonrise.
The prison administration stepped in to ensure that the inmates could observe the religious customs, with Jail Superintendent Prashant Upadhyay personally overseeing the procurement of traditional requirements. Using funds from the Prisoners' Welfare Fund, authorities arranged items including mehendi, bangles, traditional attire, earthen lamps, sieves, puja essentials, and a variety of sweets.
Special Arrangements for Families
Logistical hurdles were addressed through a combination of physical access and digital assistance. According to prison officials, two of the inmates—identified as Chanda and Pushpa—had husbands who are also lodged within the same correctional facility. Authorities permitted these couples to meet during the evening prayers, enabling the women to complete their rituals in the presence of their spouses.
For the remaining three inmates whose husbands were outside, female prison staff facilitated virtual viewings by displaying photographs of their spouses on mobile phones. This allowed the women to complete the traditional sighting through the sieve and conclude their fasts.
Among the five participating women, Jaleb Raja is serving a life sentence in a murder case, while Chanda is serving a 12-year sentence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Pushpa, Chandni, and Reena are currently undertrials facing various legal proceedings.
A Focus on Rehabilitation
Jail Superintendent Prashant Upadhyay emphasized that modern correctional facilities function not merely as centers of punishment, but as institutions dedicated to reform and human rehabilitation.
"Respecting the religious beliefs and emotional well-being of inmates is a crucial component of our reformative framework," Upadhyay stated. He noted that the facility regularly facilitates similar arrangements for major cultural and religious festivals, including Raksha Bandhan, Eid, and Diwali, to help maintain prisoners' societal ties and emotional stability.
