Delhi Opposition Rally Sees High Tensions and Slogans

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge adopted a stern, paternal tone toward the INDIA bloc rally crowd in New Delhi, issuing a direct ultimatum that he would shorten his speech only if attendees settled down. The octogenarian leader expressed clear displeasure at the high decibel levels that greeted him at the podium.

Upon stepping up to address the gathering, Kharge paused in silence for roughly 30 seconds as competing chants and loud instrumental music reverberated through the venue. Addressing the unruly section of the audience, the 84-year-old leader delivered a stark warning.

"If you stay quiet, I'll finish my speech in five minutes; if you do not stay quiet, I'll speak for an hour," Kharge told the crowd.

The rally's primary focus centered on criticisms directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside broader opposition grievances regarding the electoral process. However, the event also served as a stage to revisit a recent political controversy involving the Congress president and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Resurgence of a Controversial Slogan

During the proceedings, a segment of the audience began chanting a variation of a line previously used by Kharge during a rally in Patna: a provocative phrase directed at the Prime Minister. The original remark, uttered weeks prior, had sparked intense backlash and nationwide protests from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

During that earlier October incident in Patna, a minor altercation occurred after an audience member reportedly shouted a counter-phrase, leading to a heated exchange where Kharge repeated the contentious retort three times. While the BJP subsequently launched counter-campaigns defending the Prime Minister, Kharge took a more measured approach at the Delhi gathering.

In his nine-minute address, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha echoed the underlying sentiment of his earlier remarks without repeating the specific controversial phrasing.

"Modi will go, and democracy will thus survive," Kharge stated during his speech.

Broad Opposition Front Targets Electoral Authorities

The Delhi demonstration drew top figures from the opposition alliance, including senior Congress leaders, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. The gathering followed a protest march from the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction to Ramlila Maidan.

Speakers during the event launched sharp criticisms against the administration and election oversight bodies, with Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi displaying a placard featuring the Chief Election Commissioner and accusing election authorities of overseeing compromised democratic processes.

In response to the opposition's show of strength, the BJP dismissed the rally as a political failure, alleging that public enthusiasm dwindled rapidly as proceedings unfolded.
