Madhya Pradesh Station House Officer Crushed to Death During Anti-Liquor Smuggling Raid in Dewas
A senior police officer in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district was run over and killed by a vehicle allegedly transporting illicit liquor during a late-night intercept operation.

Tragic Toll in Anti-Smuggling Operation
DEWAS, MADHYA PRADESH — In a grim reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement on the frontline, a Station House Officer in Madhya Pradesh was crushed to death early Monday morning while attempting to intercept a vehicle allegedly carrying illicit liquor. The incident has cast a sharp spotlight on the state's persistent battle against underground liquor syndicates and triggered fierce political sparring over local law enforcement.
According to local authorities, Dilip Puri, the SHO of Khategaon police station, received actionable intelligence late Sunday night regarding the movement of a suspected bootlegging transport on the busy Indore-Betul highway within the Dewas district.
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, Puri mobilized a police intercept team and deployed to the designated highway stretch. However, as officers attempted to flag down and stop the targeted vehicle, the driver allegedly accelerated directly toward the checkpoint. Puri was struck by the vehicle, sustaining critical injuries. Despite immediate efforts to rush him for medical assistance, he succumbed to his wounds.
Swift Detainment and Ongoing Probe
Senior law enforcement officials confirmed that the vehicle has been successfully seized and the driver has been taken into custody. Investigators are currently examining the exact sequence of events to determine whether the collision was a deliberate act of vehicular homicide by the driver attempting to flee or the tragic outcome of a high-speed checkpoint evasion.
"We have secured the vehicle and detained the primary suspect. A thorough forensic and ballistic investigation is underway to establish culpability and uncover the wider network supplying these illegal consignments," a senior district police official stated, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Broader Crisis Over Illicit Liquor
The fatality has reignited public and political outrage over the rampant illegal liquor trade plaguing the Dewas district. The region has already been reeling from a massive recent tragedy that saw at least 13 fatalities between September 27 and October 16 in Chandana and Binjana villages, following the consumption of suspected spurious and adulterated alcohol. Numerous other victims suffered permanent health complications, including severe vision loss.
While local district administration initially disputed the direct link between the fatalities and toxic brews, the mounting pressure eventually forced a high-level administrative probe, leading to the suspension of several excise personnel and the transfer of senior officials.
The death of SHO Dilip Puri immediately drew sharp reactions from opposition figures. Senior Congress leader Arun Yadav launched a blistering critique against the state administration, arguing that the tragedy exposes a complete breakdown of public safety and order in Madhya Pradesh.
"When even those entrusted with enforcing the law are not safe on our highways, who will protect the common people?" Yadav questioned in a public statement, demanding direct accountability from Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and alleging that parts of the state had effectively devolved into a safe haven for criminal syndicates.
