Civic Body Campaign Sparks Political Row

A controversy has erupted in Mumbai following the removal of a public awareness video featuring actor Dia Mirza by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body had enlisted several high-profile celebrities for an anti-firecracker campaign aimed at mitigating seasonal air pollution, a persistent challenge in urban centers during the winter months.

While public service announcements from other participants remained on the civic body's official digital channels, Mirza's video was taken down following strong objections raised by local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.

Mayor Demands Explanation Over Past Engagements

Weighing into the controversy, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde expressed strong disapproval of the actor's involvement with municipal initiatives. Beyond the recent social media removal, Tawde took issue with Mirza's earlier participation in an Environment Day event held at the BMC headquarters on June 5, which was attended by senior civic officials, including BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide.

Tawde announced plans to seek a formal explanation from the commissioner regarding the rationale behind inviting the actor to official municipal functions.

"It is not to do with any religion. She has always taken an anti-Hindu and anti-government stand. That is why we oppose her, not her religion. We believe in secularism," Tawde stated, addressing allegations of religious bias.

The mayor further indicated that the civic administration would tighten oversight of its public relations and outreach proposals moving forward. "Dia Mirza does selective propaganda, and we have seen this in the past. She can post whatever she wants on her personal handle, but she will not be allowed to do so on the BMC handle. We will make sure she is blacklisted in our Mahayuti government," she added.

Actor Defends Public Awareness Message

In response to the mounting political backlash, Dia Mirza defended the intent behind the recorded message, emphasizing that the campaign was designed to promote public health and mindful celebrations.

"Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The video was recorded in the interest of public awareness, with the intention of encouraging a healthier and more mindful celebration," Mirza said in an official statement.

Highlighting the urgency of the environmental crisis, she added, "Air pollution is a matter of public health, and every effort towards reducing it is a step towards a better environment for all."

As municipal authorities review their communication protocols, the incident has highlighted ongoing tensions regarding the intersection of celebrity advocacy, environmental policy, and local governance in India's financial capital.
