Direct Clash Over Corporate Claims

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has launched a scathing critique against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of attempting to spread distrust and economic toxicity. The strong rebuttal follows Gandhi’s public assertions on social media alleging that the Tata group was being "criminally destroyed" under the current administration.

Writing on official digital platforms amid an ongoing high-profile corporate boardroom tussle, Gandhi had claimed that no business leader dared to speak out and accused top leadership of treating Indian enterprise as a political plaything. He further vowed that the opposition would ensure justice for what he characterized as systemic targeting.

Sitharaman Slams 'Baseless Aspersions'

Rejecting the allegations outright, Sitharaman asserted that the senior Congress leader had a history of decrying the successes of domestic industries and entrepreneurs.

"Being the Leader of the Opposition, I suggest you refrain from politicising every issue," Sitharaman stated in her response. "Also, casually labelling commercial and legal matters as criminal is unacceptable. You have repeatedly decried the successes of Indian industry and our entrepreneurs."

The Finance Minister accused the opposition of attempting to incite business leaders to join political narratives aimed at undermining economic confidence.

A Historical Contrast on Enterprise

Shifting focus to historical economic policies, Sitharaman drew a sharp contrast between the current governance framework and decades of past Congress administration. She alleged that under previous regimes, the spirit of Indian entrepreneurship was smothered by the restrictive "Licence-Quota Raj," which she claimed inflicted widespread poverty across the nation.

In contrast, she maintained that the administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi views Indian industries as vital job creators and primary drivers of national economic growth. According to the minister, policies have been deliberately structured to enable enterprise, support industrial expansion, and encourage foreign and domestic investment.

Defense of Judicial Integrity

Addressing Gandhi’s promise to "ensure justice," Sitharaman turned the criticism back toward the opposition's historical interactions with national institutions. She reminded the public that the Constitution of India guarantees justice for all citizens through independent courts, pointing out past instances where she claimed the opposition party had undermined the judiciary.

"History is witness to the shoddy manner in which you, your party, and the PMs belonging to your party have demeaned the judiciary," Sitharaman noted. "So Rahul ji, refrain from seeing ghosts everywhere."

Political analysts view the exchange as an escalation of the ongoing discourse surrounding corporate governance, regulatory oversight, and the broader intersection of politics and big business in India's fast-evolving economic landscape.
