PM Modi to Launch Rs 21,800 Crore Pune Metro Projects, Featuring India's First All-Women Operated Corridor
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for Pune Metro projects worth Rs 21,800 crore, boosting urban mobility.

Expanding Urban Mobility in Maharashtra
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for transformative Pune Metro infrastructure projects valued at approximately Rs 21,800 crore. The virtual ceremony, scheduled via video conferencing, marks a significant milestone in enhancing the urban transit landscape of Maharashtra's second-largest city.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, the centerpiece of the upcoming inauguration is the Pune Metro Line 3—popularly known as the Pink Line—constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 8,300 crore. Spanning roughly 23 kilometers, this modern corridor connects the Maan region to the District Court Metro station, establishing critical transit links between the prominent Hinjewadi IT hub and Shivajinagar.
Breakthroughs in Gender Inclusivity and Sustainability
The newly completed Pink Line introduces pioneering operational standards for India's public transport network. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the entire corridor will be operated exclusively by women train operators, underscoring a strong institutional commitment to women's empowerment and inclusive employment.
Environmental sustainability also anchors the project's design framework. Roughly 30 percent of the Pink Line's total electricity demand will be fulfilled through solar power generation, curbing the carbon footprint of daily mass transit.
Designed to integrate smoothly with the existing municipal rail network, the corridor aims to alleviate chronic vehicular congestion, lower carbon emissions, and reduce reliance on private automobiles for thousands of daily commuters and technology professionals.
Laying Groundwork for Phase-II Expansion
Beyond current inaugurations, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for Phase-II of the Pune Metro, estimated at Rs 13,500 crore. This extensive subsequent phase encompasses Lines 2A, 2B, 4, and 4A, substantially widening the metropolitan catchment area.
* Line 2A & 2B: Spanning 12.75 kilometers, connecting Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi. * Line 4 & 4A: Extending across 25.52 kilometers from Kharadi to Khadakwasla, with a 6.12-kilometer spur connecting Nal Stop to Manik Baug.
The expanded routes will establish vital interchanges at Swargate, Nal Stop, and Kharadi Bypass, ensuring seamless multimodal integration with intercity bus services and existing transit infrastructure across bustling commercial and residential zones such as Magarpatta, Hadapsar, and Warje.
