Political Turmoil in Punjab

Political instability struck the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab on Monday as suspended legislator and former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh formally tendered his resignation from the state legislative assembly. His departure marks the third high-profile MLA resignation from the party within a span of 48 hours, dealing a severe blow to the party's ranks ahead of the crucial 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

There is mounting speculation in political circles that the outgoing leader from the Amritsar North constituency is likely to cross over to the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though official announcements regarding his next political move remain pending.

Singh submitted his formal resignation letter to Punjab Legislative Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, bringing an end to his current legislative tenure under the AAP banner.

A Bitter Parting Note

Taking to social media to announce his decision, Singh expressed gratitude to his constituents while launching a sharp critique of the state's prevailing political culture.

"My most revered brothers and sisters of Amritsar, I have resigned from my membership in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. I will remain indebted to you until my last breath for the love and respect you have shown me," Singh posted.

He further urged a unified front to dismantle what he termed the politics of superficial development, calling for collective action against pressing state issues. "We must all unite in a collective effort to rise above the politics of lanes and ribbon-cutting, and transform Punjab—trapped by drugs, extortion, gangsterism, and corruption—back into a progressive and beloved state," he added.

Reflecting on his tenure, Singh claimed to have accomplished ninety percent of his legislative targets, asserting that his greatest legacy was dismantling the entrenched 'mai-baap' culture in local governance by treating the public as his ultimate source of inspiration.

Escalating Internal Dissent

Singh's resignation follows a string of departures that have rattled the state's political landscape. On Sunday, two other AAP legislators—Chetan Singh Jouramajra from Samana and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanour in Patiala district—also resigned from the party’s primary membership.

The friction between Singh and the party leadership is not entirely unexpected. In June of the previous year, he was suspended from the AAP for five years over alleged anti-party activities, a disciplinary action triggered after he publicly questioned the operational strategies of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau.

As political alignments shift rapidly in the run-up to the upcoming electoral battles, analysts suggest that these back-to-back resignations will force the ruling administration to recalibrate its strategy to retain legislative stability and public confidence in the region.
