Political Showdown in the Capital

New Delhi witnessed a fresh political flashpoint on Sunday as the INDIA bloc marched from Connaught Place's Outer Circle to Ramlila Maidan to protest alleged electoral fraud. The opposition alliance demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls.

Ahead of the march, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi attempted to counter contentions that large political gatherings disrupt local business during the festive season. A day after urging rally participants to support local businesses by shopping at city markets, Gandhi claimed that authorities and the ruling party had deliberately obstructed commerce.

The 'Closed Shops' Controversy

Speaking from an open-top safari vehicle while heading toward the venue, Gandhi alleged that the ruling dispensation had forcefully closed commercial establishments in the heart of the national capital's prime shopping district.

"We told everyone that when you come here for the march and the mega rally, buy things, do some shopping. But, while coming to Connaught Place, we found out that the BJP has forcibly shut down every single shop," Gandhi stated in a video message recorded en route to the rally.

Parts of the capital's central business district remained shuttered for several hours on Sunday morning. Parking areas were heavily utilized by vehicles transporting political workers, while pedestrian footfall in open stores remained minimal. The area has experienced multiple disruptions in recent months due to various demonstrations and youth-led protests.

Traders Caught in the Crossfire

Local merchant bodies expressed deep frustration over the persistent disruptions caused by frequent political demonstrations in the commercial hub.

Atul Bhargava, president of the New Delhi Traders Association, criticized the continuous holding of high-profile marches through the area. He highlighted that such events create an atmosphere of uncertainty, discouraging regular customers from visiting and severely impacting the traders' right to livelihood.

Ahead of the event, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) had formally appealed to several senior INDIA bloc leaders to reschedule the demonstration to a date past November 11, noting that billions of rupees in daily trade turnover were at stake during a critical festival shopping window.

Despite the appeals and trade bodies' concerns, the opposition alliance proceeded with its scheduled mobilization, culminating in a major political gathering at Ramlila Maidan.
