TN Chief Minister Meets Economist Following Outcry Over Unlawful Early-Morning Detention
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister met MIDS professor Kalaiyarasan following intense backlash over his early-morning police detention, which officials termed a case of mistaken identity.

Controversy Erupts Over Academic's Detention
CHENNAI — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister met Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) professor Kalaiyarasan in what is widely viewed as a move to mitigate mounting political damage. The meeting follows an incident where the prominent economist was picked up by plain-clothes police officers in the early hours of the morning, sparking widespread condemnation from opposition parties and civil society.
Professor Kalaiyarasan was detained for over two hours in an episode that law enforcement authorities subsequently characterized as a case of mistaken identity. While sources confirmed that the Chief Minister personally invited the academic for discussions, no official photographs or statements regarding the contents of the meeting were released immediately.
The high-profile encounter comes amid intense scrutiny of the Tamil Nadu Police's operational conduct. Kalaiyarasan alleged that he was forcibly taken away without being presented with a formal complaint, his mobile phone was confiscated, and his family was left entirely uninformed about his whereabouts or safety during the ordeal.
Allegations of Harassment and Political Motivations
According to the professor's account, the plain-clothes personnel intercepted him around 5:00 AM, whisking him away in a taxi for aggressive questioning lasting more than two hours. He maintained that he was never shown any official documentation or informed of the legal grounds for his detention.
The incident has drawn sharp political reactions, particularly because Kalaiyarasan had recently given a critical interview highlighting the sharp escalation of essential commodity prices in the state. Opposition figures and critics have questioned whether the police action was genuinely a administrative error or an attempt to silence dissenting expert voices.
In response to the violation of due process, Kalaiyarasan lodged a formal complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP). He raised serious apprehensions that the Instagram post critical of a ruling TVK MLA—which ostensibly triggered the police action—might have been entirely fabricated to target and harass academics critical of the administration.
Political Fallout and Ministerial Apology
The controversy quickly transcended local police jurisdictions, drawing condemnation from major political players. CPM Tamil Nadu state secretary Shanmugam was among the first to denounce the police overreach, questioning whether law enforcement was acting with unchecked authority. He argued that even if a formal complaint existed, standard judicial protocols and Supreme Court guidelines required issuing a formal summons rather than arresting a respected scholar at dawn.
DMK president MK Stalin also issued a blistering critique, demanding an unreserved apology from both the Chief Minister and the state police chief. Stalin asserted that Kalaiyarasan was explicitly targeted for exposing the unprecedented inflation under the ruling TVK government, remarking that he had not anticipated an academic would be targeted simply because the ruling establishment is intolerant of critical analysis.
Amid mounting pressure and questions regarding adherence to constitutional procedures, Tamil Nadu Law Minister Nirmal Kumar formally described the incident as a grave administrative error and offered an apology to Professor Kalaiyarasan.
