Transferred Kochi Police Commissioner Denies Interference in Mercedes Crash Case
Former Kochi Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar has strongly refuted allegations of preferential treatment toward the family of an accused minor in a fatal hit-and-run case.

Administrative Shakeup Follows Fatal Kochi Accident
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Former Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar has categorically denied allegations that his recent transfer was linked to any political or judicial interference in a high-profile fatal hit-and-run case. The accident, which occurred on October 25 in Kochi, involved a Mercedes-Benz allegedly driven by the minor son of an Additional District and Sessions Judge, which rammed a two-wheeler and resulted in the death of 55-year-old Jayabalakrishnan.
Speaking to reporters in Ernakulam, Kumar maintained that his reassignment was strictly a routine administrative measure and pushed back against mounting public speculation.
"I am not at all present on social media, and therefore this is the only window for me to express this truth that I have not interfered or helped the family of the accused minor or his father in the case," Kumar stated.
Public Outrage and Police Suspensions
The October 25 tragedy sparked immediate public outrage and protests across Kerala after the 17-year-old accused was initially granted bail directly from the police station. The initial handling of the case raised widespread questions regarding accountability and potential systemic bias.
Following public pressure, authorities subsequently added further charges, taking the minor into custody before he was later granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board. The fallout also reached the local precinct, leading to the suspension of four officers attached to the Cheranalloor police station.
The Kerala government subsequently transferred Mahesh Kumar, appointing senior IPS officer R Nishanthini as the new Kochi City Police Commissioner. The timing of the move fueled rumors of a disciplinary transfer, a claim Kumar has firmly rejected.
Denials of Communication and Elite Treatment
Addressing allegations of systemic favoritism, the former commissioner asserted that he had neither received a single phone call from the judge in question nor communicated directly or indirectly with any member of the judge's family. Furthermore, Kumar maintained that he never issued instructions to junior officers to grant preferential treatment or leniency to the accused.
Mahesh Kumar is a decorated 2005-batch IPS officer with a background in counterterrorism and central agencies. Originally allotted to the Jammu and Kashmir cadre, he served in militancy-affected zones where he sustained injuries during a terrorist attack, later earning the President's Police Medal for Gallantry in 2010. He was transferred to the Kerala cadre on compassionate grounds in 2013 and has previously served as Kozhikode City Police Commissioner, IG of Traffic, and DIG with the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
As the investigation continues under newly appointed leadership, public scrutiny remains intense as the victim's family demands a thorough and transparent judicial process.
