Tragedy Strikes Uttarakhand Skies

A tragic helicopter crash in the mountainous terrain of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, has left six people dead, including the pilot and five passengers. The aircraft, operated by Trans Bharat Aviation with registration number VT-HCX, was flying from the holy town of Badrinath toward Dehradun when disaster struck on Friday.

According to district administration officials, the helicopter lost contact near an Army post on Hathi Pahad, opposite Joshimath, shortly after taking off at 1:14 PM. The sudden loss of communication triggered an immediate emergency response and a comprehensive multi-agency search operation.

Multi-Agency Search and Rescue Efforts

Adverse weather conditions, characterized by continuous rainfall and low cloud cover, severely hampered visibility and delayed early access to the crash site. Despite the challenging environment, the district administration, the disaster management department, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) quickly mobilized.

Search teams deployed aerial surveillance, eventually spotting smoke and a burning object in a forested area above the JP Dam near Chaien village. Medical personnel were dispatched to the site, while local officials coordinated recovery efforts.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami closely monitored the situation, directing all available state resources to assist in the operation. Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar and other senior officials oversaw the immediate deployment of additional surveillance helicopters to locate the wreckage.

Victims Identified

Authorities have released the identities of those on board. The pilot in command was 48-year-old Himanshu Sabharwal, a resident of Shalimar Bagh in West Delhi.

The five passengers, all hailing from Bengaluru, have been identified as:

* Pratap B Ningaraju (41) * Arun Salunke (44), a member of the police force * Sudhir K (49) * HS Nataraj (51) * Shankargouda VB (39), a practicing lawyer

Local authorities and police officials are continuing to verify procedural details and coordinate the repatriation of the victims' remains to their respective families in Delhi and Bengaluru. Investigations into the exact technical and environmental causes of the crash are expected to follow once search and recovery operations conclude.
