Tragedy Strikes Idukki Post Office

A routine Friday morning at a rural post office in Kerala's Idukki district turned into a gruesome crime scene when a man allegedly attacked his wife and subsequently took his own life, local law enforcement officials reported.

The incident took place at approximately 9:30 AM in the Kuzhithozhu area. Sreeja, who worked as a temporary postmaster at the facility, had just arrived to open the office for the day when she was ambushed.

According to preliminary investigations by local police, her husband, identified as Santhosh, approached her from behind and struck her on the head with an iron rod. The brutal assault left the victim with severe head injuries.

Bystanders Kept at Bay

Eyewitnesses and nearby residents rushed toward the post office after hearing the commotion. However, the situation escalated further when Santhosh allegedly brandished a revolver, pointing the firearm at the gathering crowd to keep them at bay.

Before anyone could intervene to disarm him, Santhosh turned the weapon on himself and fired. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency responders transported the critically injured Sreeja to a specialized private hospital in Kattappana, where medical personnel are currently fighting to save her life.

Investigation Underway

Senior police officials and forensic experts swiftly secured the area to gather crucial physical evidence. The district police chief also inspected the crime scene.

Preliminary inquiries by investigators point toward recurring domestic disputes and family issues as the underlying motive behind the violent confrontation. However, authorities emphasized that the exact trigger for the attack remains under formal investigation.

Police are completing mandatory legal formalities, including an inquest proceeding, before transferring the body for a postmortem examination.
