A New Era for Rail Logistics

Indian Railways has officially rolled out its ambitious door-to-door parcel delivery service, branded as 'Ghar Se Ghar Tak', following a successful pilot phase. The initiative aims to modernize the country's freight and parcel handling ecosystem by bridging the gap between railway stations and customers' doorsteps.

Initially available in eight major urban centers—Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune—the service eliminates the traditional requirement for customers to physically visit railway parcel offices to dispatch or retrieve shipments.

How the Service Operates

The hybrid model leverages the extensive long-distance transit network of Indian Railways alongside specialized last-mile logistics partners.

- Booking: Customers can schedule pickups and manage shipments through the official Rail Parcel App or web portal. - Timelines: Bookings can be made up to 15 days in advance or as late as one day prior to the scheduled train departure. - Handover: Logistics partners collect the parcels from the sender's location and transfer them to railway personnel up to one hour before the train departs.

Digital Integration and Security

The initiative is heavily anchored in digital infrastructure to ensure transparency and security. Key technological features include:

- Live Tracking: Each booking generates a unique 10-digit Progressive Reference Record (PRR) number, allowing clients to monitor their shipments in real-time. - Digital Verification: Deliveries are secured through a mandatory One-Time Password (OTP) verification system. - Flexible Payments: Customers can settle charges digitally via UPI, credit cards, debit cards, or net banking, complete with automated digital GST invoicing.

Cancellation and Refund Policies

For freight cancellations initiated prior to parcel pickup, Indian Railways offers a full refund of the railway freight charge, subject to a nominal ₹10 clerkage deduction. However, refunds concerning doorstep pickup and delivery fees remain subject to the individual operational policies of the respective logistics partners.

Industry experts note that the initiative will provide a significant boost to small businesses, independent entrepreneurs, and e-commerce sellers seeking cost-effective and reliable inter-city shipping solutions.
