State-Run Retailer Integrates Buy-Back Scheme

Liquor prices across Tamil Nadu are set to see a structural shift starting November 1, as the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) officially integrates its bottle buy-back scheme directly into the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). The adjustment adds a flat Rs 10 to the retail cost per bottle to account for environmental and social welfare cess.

Previously, consumers were required to pay an additional Rs 10 over and above the listed MRP at retail counters, which was intended to be refunded upon the return of empty bottles. However, widespread consumer grievances regarding compliance and overcharging prompted state authorities to fold the charge directly into the official pricing structure.

TASMAC has maintained a strict stance against rogue elements within its retail network, issuing stern warnings of disciplinary action and suspension for outlet employees found engaged in unauthorized overcharging—a practice that historically saw markups ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 40 per bottle at select locations.

Digital Payments Made Mandatory

In a parallel administrative push toward financial transparency and modernization, TASMAC has announced a phased rollout of compulsory digital transactions at its retail outlets. Effective November 1, digital payment methods will be mandatory for all liquor purchases exceeding Rs 1,000.

This digital mandate will expand further on January 1, 2027, lowering the threshold to require electronic payments for any purchase above Rs 500.

Transport Sector Shakeup: Auto Fares Doubled

In addition to the retail reforms, the Tamil Nadu government has implemented a comprehensive revision of autorickshaw tariffs across the state—the first such adjustment in 13 years.

The minimum fare has been doubled from the existing Rs 25 to Rs 50, covering the initial 1.8 kilometers of travel. Commuters will now be charged an additional Rs 25 for every subsequent kilometer.

To safeguard the interests of night-shift commuters and drivers, the administration has established that night-time fares operating between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM will be calculated at 1.5 times the standard daytime rate. Furthermore, a waiting charge of Rs 1 per minute has been formally prescribed under the updated fare structure.
