Historic Consecration in Gelephu

In a landmark display of bilateral friendship and shared spiritual heritage, Bhutan has erected and consecrated 108 Buddhist stupas—known locally as Jangchub Chortens—within a remarkably brief timeframe at the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC). Among the newly consecrated spiritual monuments, Stupa number 76 has been officially dedicated to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The intensive consecration ceremony commenced in the early hours on November 1, running continuously for twelve hours under the spiritual guidance of Bhutan's Chief Abbot and in the distinguished presence of King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk. The monumental undertaking was achieved through the collaborative effort of thousands of volunteers, monks, and artisans.

High-Level Indian Representation

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju traveled to Bhutan to represent the Government of India at the historic ceremony. Alongside the Bhutanese monarch, Rijiju unveiled the commemorative plaque dedicating Jangchub Chorten number 76 to PM Modi, underscoring the deep civilisational and diplomatic ties binding the two neighboring nations.

Following a formal royal audience in Gelephu, Rijiju conveyed warm greetings from the Indian Prime Minister and reaffirmed New Delhi's steadfast commitment to the enduring bilateral partnership. In public statements released following the event, the Union Minister lauded the extraordinary mobilization of over 40,000 community participants who brought the project to fruition.

Vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City

The newly established stupas form the core spiritual foundation of the Gelephu Mindfulness City, an ambitious urban planning initiative envisioned by King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk. Designed as a modern urban oasis rooted in traditional Bhutanese principles and sustainability, the GMC aims to serve as a hub for economic development, mindfulness, and cultural preservation.

During the proceedings, King Wangchuk expressed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, the Indian government, and the Indian citizenry for their unwavering backing of the Gelephu vision.

"What you have witnessed today is a reflection of who we are—a small nation whose strength lies in its people, its values, and its faith," King Wangchuk stated, addressing the gathered dignitaries and participants. "Your confidence in Gelephu is your confidence in Bhutan, and we will honour it."

The successful completion of the 108 stupas marks a significant milestone in the development of the mindfulness city, further cementing the robust diplomatic and cultural bridge shared between Thimphu and New Delhi.
