ChatGPT Blamed for Brazilian Lawmaker's 'President-Elect' Post Scandal
A close ally of Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro claims that OpenAI's ChatGPT mistakenly inserted an outdated draft designating him as 'president-elect'.

Political Fallout Over AI-Generated Drafts
Brasilia — A close ally of Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has stepped forward to claim that artificial intelligence was behind a controversial social media post that briefly declared the right-wing lawmaker as the country's rightful "president-elect." The incident, which quickly drew intense scrutiny from political observers, highlights the growing risks of utilizing generative AI tools in high-stakes political communications.
Flavio Bolsonaro stunned Brazil's political establishment when the message was published on his official social media accounts. The document alleged, without providing evidence, that the recent runoff election—won by leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by a margin of over four million votes—had been compromised by electoral fraud.
However, approximately an hour after the document went live, the senator deleted the post and replaced it with a revised version that substituted the term "president-elect" with "leader of Brazil."
The Explanation Behind the Glitch
As speculation mounted across Brazilian media regarding the sudden wording change, right-wing influencer and podcast host Paulo Figueiredo offered a technological explanation. Acting as an unofficial spokesperson for the Bolsonaro family in the United States, Figueiredo stated that the document had undergone multiple revisions involving several contributors.
According to Figueiredo, former Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, the senator's younger brother, utilized OpenAI's ChatGPT to finalize the text. He claimed that the chatbot erroneously pulled an outdated draft containing the "president-elect" phrasing and inserted an older version of Brazil's coat of arms.
"When generating the document, AI ended up including an earlier version of the text, in which Flavio presented himself as the true 'president-elect,'" Figueiredo wrote in a public statement, noting that the errors were only caught after the material had already been distributed to members of the press.
Isolation Amid Ongoing Protests
Despite the attribution of the error to an AI hallucination or prompt mix-up, Figueiredo emphasized that the core political stance of the Bolsonaro camp remains unchanged. "In the end, the essential is expressed precisely by Flavio: these elections were illegitimate, he does not recognise the result, and he will continue fighting to restore democracy in Brazil," he stated.
Representatives for OpenAI and the Bolsonaro press office did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
The controversy comes at a turbulent time for the family. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro traveled to Miami following his departure from Brazil, where he reportedly declined to comply with a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports amid an ongoing money laundering investigation—allegations he has consistently denied.
Political analysts note that the self-declared "leader" designation has failed to secure backing from key figures within Bolsonaro's broader political coalition, leaving the senator increasingly isolated as international observers, the federal electoral court, and even members of his own party continue to formally recognize Lula da Silva's victory.
