Four EU Force Members Killed in Italian Military Helicopter Crash in Bosnia
Four members of the European Union Force in Bosnia, including two soldiers and two Red Cross volunteers, were killed in a tragic Chinook helicopter crash.

Tragedy Strikes EU Peacekeeping Mission in Bosnia
Four members of the European Union Force in Bosnia (EUFOR) lost their lives and 11 others sustained injuries on Thursday when an Italian military helicopter crashed during a routine training operation.
According to official statements from EUFOR, the Chinook CH-47 helicopter went down in the Brcko region, located approximately 180 kilometers north of the capital city of Sarajevo. A total of 15 personnel were on board the aircraft at the time of the accident.
Salih Ibrahimbegovic, spokesperson for the Brcko hospital, confirmed the grim toll to Daily News 365 correspondents. Three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth person tragically succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Official Reactions and Casualties
The Italian defence ministry identified the deceased victims as two professional soldiers and two Red Cross volunteers participating in the mission.
"In this time of profound grief, my first thoughts go to the families of our fallen soldiers, to whom I extend my personal condolences," Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said in an official statement.
Of the 11 survivors currently receiving medical care, three are scheduled for an immediate transfer to a specialized medical facility in Tuzla, situated about 50 kilometers away from Brcko. Medical personnel continue working around the clock to stabilize the injured.
Ongoing Investigation and Mission Background
EUFOR has launched a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine the exact technical or environmental factors that led to the crash. Initial reports from the peacekeeping mission confirmed that no civilian infrastructure, property, or bystanders were impacted by the incident.
Local media outlets shared photographs depicting the wreckage scattered across a flat, grassy field in the Brcko area as emergency response teams secured the perimeter.
EUFOR maintains a stabilization force in the Balkan nation ranging between 1,000 and 1,500 personnel, tasked with upholding the Dayton Peace Agreement. The European mission was established in 2004, succeeding the previous NATO-led peacekeeping presence that had operated in the region since the conclusion of the 1992-1995 conflict.
This incident marks one of the deadliest aviation accidents for the mission since June 2008, when four EUFOR members—comprising two German officers and two Spanish pilots—lost their lives in a similar helicopter tragedy.
