Binance Suffers Historic Multi-Billion Dollar Cyberattack, Freezes Services as Authorities Investigate
Cryptocurrency giant Binance halts all deposits and withdrawals following a massive security breach estimated by analysts to approach nearly $6 billion in stolen assets.

Global Crypto Exchange Paralysed by Major Breach
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volumes, has confirmed a massive security breach that has forced the platform to temporarily suspend all user deposits and withdrawals. The incident has sent shockwaves through global financial markets and triggered immediate emergency interventions by major stablecoin issuers.
While the exact vector of the cyberattack remains under investigation, blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis estimated that approximately $5.91 billion was compromised at the time of the theft. If confirmed, this would eclipse previous major cyberattacks, including a $1.5 billion breach targeting the Bybit platform earlier in 2025.
Emergency Freezes and Industry Response
In an effort to mitigate the damage, Binance announced that security teams had successfully frozen substantial portions of funds and were coordinating closely with international law enforcement agencies, blockchain intelligence firms, and industry partners.
Major players in the digital asset ecosystem moved swiftly to contain the fallout. Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, confirmed that his firm had frozen roughly $1.6 billion tied to the potential exploit. Simultaneously, Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire reported that his company had locked down over $800 million in USDC stablecoin assets.
Former Binance chief Changpeng Zhao, who remains a majority shareholder in the enterprise, noted that total direct losses could exceed $1 billion as tracing efforts continue across multiple blockchain networks.
Markets React as Security Concerns Mount
News of the breach immediately impacted global cryptocurrency valuations. Bitcoin dipped by nearly five percent, Ethereum declined by approximately six percent, and BNB, the native token of the Binance ecosystem, tumbled nearly 10 percent.
Industry analysts have pointed out that the scale of the breach underscores growing concerns regarding the sophistication of modern cyber threats against financial infrastructure, particularly as security experts study the intersection of advanced automated exploits and traditional cryptography.
Federal authorities, including the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, have yet to issue formal public statements regarding the ongoing investigation.
