Terrifying Ambush in Dholewal

Former Punjab Youth Congress general secretary Jagjot Singh narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Ludhiana's Dholewal neighbourhood, police confirmed. The violent assault occurred late in the evening as Singh, accompanied by his elderly mother and three-year-old son, was returning home after dining out at a local restaurant.

According to preliminary police reports and eyewitness accounts from the family, a group of at least eight armed assailants targeted Singh's vehicle, opening heavy gunfire before resorting to physical violence.

Sequence of Events

Recounting the horrifying ordeal, Singh's mother, Manjeet Kaur, stated that the family had stopped briefly during their commute.

"We had gone to a restaurant. After eating, we were returning home when he stopped and got out of the car to get a bottle of water," Kaur told investigators.

While Singh was outside the vehicle, the group of eight men suddenly emerged from behind and opened fire. Investigators at the scene noted that approximately five to six rounds were discharged at the victim. As Singh desperately attempted to re-enter his automobile for safety, the attackers closed in rapidly, striking him on the head with an axe.

Despite sustaining critical injuries, Singh managed to take control of the steering wheel and drove himself and his family directly to a nearby hospital, where medical staff administered immediate trauma care.

Motive and Prior Threats

Speaking from his hospital bed, Singh told local law enforcement that he suspects a deep-seated political rivalry behind the assault. He revealed that the exact same group of perpetrators had targeted his residence with gunfire approximately a year ago.

Although Singh is no longer actively involved with the Congress party—currently focusing his efforts on running a non-profit organization and a private property business—police are exploring multiple angles, including historical political animosities.

Law and Order Concerns

This high-profile violent incident has sparked intense political fallout across Punjab. Opposition parties have swiftly used the attack to amplify mounting criticism against the state government, citing a deteriorating law and order situation and a rampant drug menace.

Local law enforcement agencies have registered an official case and formed special investigative teams to identify, track down, and apprehend all suspects involved in the armed ambush. Patrols have been stepped up in the vicinity as investigations continue.
