Commercial Fallout and Public Censure

French football star Kylian Mbappé is facing an unprecedented wave of backlash and commercial fallout across China after a video surfaced showing the Real Madrid forward making light of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong. Despite issuing a formal apology, Chinese authorities and major corporate partners have moved swiftly to distance themselves from the athlete.

The controversy erupted earlier this week when a video circulated online featuring Mbappé engaging with an internet meme that referred to him as a 'dictator'. The player appeared amused by an iteration where his face was digitally superimposed onto Mao Zedong. While Mao remains a deeply polarizing figure globally due to policies that led to massive loss of life, he is officially revered in China as the founder of the People's Republic of China and the hero of the communist revolution.

Corporate Sponsorships Severed

The fallout has rapidly impacted Mbappé’s lucrative commercial partnerships in the world's second-largest economy. Chinese beverage giant Dongpeng was the first to announce it had completely scrapped its partnership with the player. Dairy heavyweights Mengniu and Milkground quickly followed suit, terminating their association with the French international.

Simultaneously, state media and broadcasting institutions have enacted stringent measures. CMG, which oversees the state broadcaster CCTV, announced the immediate suspension of broadcasts for La Liga, the premier Spanish football league where Mbappé currently competes.

Physical Removal from Public Spaces

Public manifestations of the backlash are now widespread across major Chinese urban centers. Photographs shared widely on social media platforms document municipal authorities and advertisers systematically scrubbing Mbappé's likeness from promotional hoardings, billboards, and transit networks. In several instances, his face on subway advertisements has been physically covered or entirely obscured, while his image has been stripped from commercial product packaging.

Apologies Issued

In response to the escalating crisis, Mbappé took to social media to issue a direct apology to his Chinese fan base, admitting that his remarks were ill-considered.

"My comment was ill-judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world," Mbappé stated in his message. "I apologise to everyone my words have upset. This was absolutely not my intention. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry."

Meanwhile, La Liga management also moved to contain the diplomatic and commercial damage, issuing a statement clarifying that Mbappé's remarks were made strictly in a personal capacity and did not reflect the views or values of the institution.

"Within the scope of our institutional responsibility, we apologise on behalf of La Liga and all its clubs," the league's statement read, emphasizing its commitment to cross-cultural respect and acknowledging its millions of supporters across China.
