Ukraine's Longest Regional Ceasefire Ends in Kherson After Six Days
The six-day humanitarian truce in Ukraine's Kherson region has concluded as Russia declines an extension, prompting fears of renewed hostilities.

Truce Ends as Russia Declines Extension
The longest localized ceasefire of the Russia-Ukraine conflict has officially ended in the eastern Kherson region after Moscow declined an offer for an extension, Ukrainian officials reported.
The rare pause in hostilities, which commenced early Tuesday following diplomatic mediation by US First Lady Melania Trump, successfully facilitated a crucial humanitarian mission into the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. As the conflict grinds through its fifth year, neither side reported major ceasefire violations during the six-day window, marking what local lawmakers termed the most significant de-escalation since 2022.
"The ceasefire, which was in effect from October 27 to November 1, has ended," confirmed Ukraine's Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets. He described the temporary halt as a vital milestone in joint humanitarian efforts.
Diplomatic Shifts and Strategic Demands
The expiration of the truce comes as US-mediated diplomatic talks between Moscow and Kyiv are slated to resume later this month. Those discussions had been effectively frozen since early February following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions remain high. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv would halt strikes on Russian oil refineries—addressing a key demand from US counterpart Donald Trump—provided Washington supplies Ukraine with advanced Patriot interceptor missiles.
Cyber Incident and Regional Vigilance
Minutes after the midnight conclusion of the truce, the Ukrainian air force and anti-disinformation center reported a suspected cyberattack targeting the nation's air raid alert system. False alerts regarding a radiation threat were broadcast via the application, though officials swiftly clarified that the warning was the result of hostile interference and that no actual radiation hazard existed.
Kherson regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin urged residents to remain highly vigilant and respond immediately to official warnings as regular military activity resumes.
Military Concerns Over Renewed Fighting
While civilians in Kherson utilized the brief respite to prepare for the harsh winter months—such as tending to gardens and infrastructure—military analysts and frontline personnel have expressed grave concerns.
A Ukrainian military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, warned that the renewed fighting could surpass previous intensity. According to intelligence reports, Russian forces positioned across the Dnipro River utilized the calm to amass fresh troop reserves, replenish ammunition stockpiles, and conduct extensive drone surveillance on Ukrainian defensive positions.
