Radhika Gupta Urges Gen Z Investors to Avoid Daily Portfolio Checks and Market Noise
Edelweiss Mutual Fund CEO Radhika Gupta advises young investors to focus on long-term goals and tune out daily market volatility.

Navigating Market Volatility with a Long-Term Vision
As a new generation of investors enters the equity markets via digital platforms, financial leaders are stepping forward with guidance on handling economic turbulence. Radhika Gupta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, has cautioned young retail participants against the psychological trap of checking their portfolios excessively during market swings.
Speaking at a prominent financial summit in Mumbai, Gupta praised Gen Z for stepping into the investment ecosystem earlier than previous generations, describing the demographic as confident, financially literate, and ambitious. However, she emphasized that weathering market cycles requires psychological resilience and a commitment to long-term wealth creation rather than reacting to daily net asset value (NAV) fluctuations.
The Pitfalls of Constant Monitoring
Addressing the habits of young investors who navigate equities through modern applications, Gupta noted that tracking investments continuously generates unnecessary anxiety. She characterized the obsession with real-time market movements as detrimental to peace of mind.
"My genuine advice to Gen Z is don't watch the news," Gupta stated during the interactive session. "Watching your portfolio every day... don't watch news to check your net asset value. That's a formula for anxiety."
Instead of reacting to immediate headwinds, Gupta recommended zooming out and leaning on proven historical strategies. She highlighted that systematic investment plans (SIPs) maintained over a ten-year horizon have historically delivered resilient outcomes for disciplined participants, mitigating the risks associated with lump-sum entry timing.
India's Growth Story and Equity Realities
Beyond behavioral advice, Gupta underscored the fundamental strength of the domestic market, pointing out that corporate earnings growth in India remains robust despite challenging external geopolitical and macroeconomic factors.
Acknowledging that equity markets come with inherent risks, she reminded investors that higher potential returns over fixed-income instruments like fixed deposits are compensation for bearing market volatility. Equity investments demand an understanding of underlying asset fundamentals rather than a speculative approach to short-term price movements.
Evolution of the Asset Management Landscape
Turning to the broader financial services sector, Gupta shared her perspective on the maturation of India's mutual fund industry. Comparing the domestic ecosystem with mature international markets like the United States and China, she observed a trend toward industry consolidation.
While larger institutional players are expected to scale further, Gupta maintained that the rapidly expanding market still offers substantial headroom for specialized asset managers with unique investment philosophies and differentiated strategies to capture emerging investor demand.
