The Pentagon in Washington D.C. has seen a series of high-level departures among senior military leadership under Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Leadership Shakeup at the Pentagon

WASHINGTON — In a significant leadership shakeup within the United States military brass, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed the Pentagon's top military planner. Army Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, who served as the head of strategy, plans, and policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff—a vital position known in military circles as the "J5"—was removed from his post this week, according to a defense official.

Lt. Gen. Sylvia is the second general to be ousted from the J5 position under Hegseth's tenure. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced into retirement last October. The defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of personnel matters, confirmed that no immediate replacement has been named and no formal reason has been provided for the dismissal.

A spokesperson for the Joint Staff acknowledged the departure, stating, "The Chairman, the Joint Staff, and the Joint Force extend our deepest gratitude to Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia and his family for their 32 years of distinguished service to our nation," while wishing them the best moving forward. Prior to his role on the Joint Staff, Sylvia commanded the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, until May 2025, and previously served as the vice director for the J5.

Geopolitical Tensions and Potential Iran Strikes

The abrupt removal comes at a critical juncture as President Donald Trump weighs renewed military actions against Iran. The ongoing conflict, which began eight months ago alongside Israel, has seen President Trump repeatedly signal an intent to "finish the job" through fresh military operations.

US officials have reportedly advised several Middle East nations and regional allies to remain on high alert for potential military escalations following upcoming midterm elections, as well as the possibility of retaliatory actions from Tehran. While diplomats briefed on the matter indicate that a final decision on fresh strikes has not yet been formally codified by the White House, logistical movements point to heightened readiness. A third US aircraft carrier alongside thousands of additional troops are currently en route to the region.

Broad Purge of Senior Military Leadership

The dismissal of Lt. Gen. Sylvia adds to a growing list of nearly two dozen generals, admirals, and senior civilian and uniformed leaders who have been forced to retire, fired, or otherwise departed under Hegseth's administration. The Pentagon has largely refrained from providing public explanations for the departures.

The ousters align with Hegseth's broader initiative, announced last month, ordering the military to cut the overall number of top flag and general officers by 20 percent by January 1, 2027. Currently encompassing roughly 800 positions, Hegseth defended the sweeping reductions during an address at Marine Corps Base Quantico, calling the policy "accountability and long overdue."

However, the restructuring has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Some members of Congress have characterized the sweeping reductions as a politically motivated purge that risks depleting institutional knowledge and will take years to properly rebuild.
