Market Overview: Benchmarks Trade Flat on Monthly Expiry

Indian equity benchmarks opened on a cautious note, reflecting broader market pressures and heightened volatility due to the monthly derivatives expiry. At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex slipped over 200 points, while the NSE Nifty dropped approximately 70 points. Meanwhile, the Indian rupee gained marginal ground, opening 2 paise stronger against the US dollar at 95.17, compared to its previous close.

Market experts had anticipated a weak start to the session. Gaurav Udani, Founder of ThinCredBlu Securities, noted ahead of the session that the Nifty was positioned for a subdued opening.

"With monthly expiry today, extreme volatility is expected, and sharp intraday swings could dominate market action," Udani stated. He identified the immediate support zone between 22,500 and 22,550, with resistance capped near 22,800 to 22,900. Analysts continue to advise a cautious 'sell-on-rise' strategy until the indices secure a sustained recovery above key resistance levels.

Wealth Protection Shift: HNI Term Insurance Bookings Double

Away from the trading floor, structural shifts are underway in how India's affluent population approaches financial security. Recent industry data reveals a staggering 100% growth in High-Net-Worth Individual (HNI) term insurance bookings since April 2023. Alongside this doubling in volume, the average ticket size—or sum assured—has expanded by 30%, signaling a decisive move toward higher financial protection.

Industry analysts attribute this trend to affluent families prioritizing robust life cover to safeguard accumulated wealth, meet long-term financial liabilities, and ensure the long-term security of dependents. Notably, less than 5% of these buyers are opting for Traditional Return of Premium (TROP) plans, underscoring that HNIs are utilizing term insurance strictly as a pure financial-protection tool rather than a hybrid savings instrument.

Younger HNIs Emerge as Key Growth Cohort

Challenging the traditional perception that high-value life insurance is strictly an older demographic's domain, individuals under the age of 35 are driving the latest wave of adoption.

Data indicates that younger HNIs now account for 50% of the growth cohort. This demographic shift highlights a fundamental change in financial planning habits among younger affluent Indians, who are integrating comprehensive life coverage much earlier in their wealth-building journeys. Crucially, market observers note that this expansion is driven by new entrants securing higher coverage brackets rather than existing policyholders merely topping up their current plans.
