Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on High Alert as Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab Approaches Coast
Eastern coastal states ramp up preparations as Cyclone Arnab intensifies, with authorities ensuring zero loss of life and preemptive evacuations.

Comprehensive Preparations Underway
As the deep depression over the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal rapidly intensifies into a severe cyclonic storm named 'Arnab', authorities across eastern India have swung into high gear. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued critical warnings for the coastal regions of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, forecasting a high-intensity landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam.
With maximum sustained winds projected to reach up to 125 kmph, gusting as high as 140 kmph, central and state administrations are leaving no stone unturned to mitigate potential devastation. High-level reviews conducted by the National Crisis Management Committee have emphasized a strict protocol of zero loss of life and minimal infrastructural damage.
Multi-Agency Mobilization and State-Level Actions
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed heavily equipped teams across vulnerable districts, backed by additional personnel kept on immediate standby. Meanwhile, the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Indian Coast Guard have positioned assets—including rescue ships and aircraft—to respond swiftly to any emergency contingencies.
In Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has deployed eight senior ministers to directly oversee pre-cyclone preventive measures. Educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers, have been shuttered across six southern districts: Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Nabarangpur.
Authorities have instituted total bans on sea fishing, restricted tourist access to vulnerable geographical features such as hills, waterfalls, and dams, and initiated mandatory evacuations for residents dwelling in low-lying areas and thatched structures.
Extended Weather Warnings
While the immediate landfall is anticipated along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to impact neighboring regions. The Union Home Ministry and the IMD have advised disaster management cells in Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, as well as parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, to remain on high alert for consequential heavy precipitation.
Agricultural departments have also issued advisories urging farmers in high-risk zones to swiftly harvest and safely store mature crops to prevent substantial agricultural losses.
