Mass Escape Shakes Theni Sub-Jail

Authorities in Tamil Nadu have launched a massive statewide manhunt after 17 inmates lodged at the Theni sub-jail escaped late Monday night. The daring breakout occurred following a violent confrontation in which the prisoners allegedly assaulted prison staff.

According to senior law enforcement officials, all 17 suspects were housed in the same cell. The incident unfolded when prison personnel entered the enclosure after receiving reports that one of the inmates was unwell. The prisoners capitalized on the moment, overpowering the staff before fleeing the facility.

Injuries Reported Among Prison Staff

During the altercation, Grade II Police Personnel Thangapandi, stationed at the district jail, sustained a serious head injury. He was immediately rushed to the Government Hospital at G Vilakku for urgent medical care. Two other jail security personnel also sustained minor injuries during the coordinated assault.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the South Zone, Vijayendra Bidari, confirmed that law enforcement agencies have mobilized extensive combing operations across the region to recapture the escapees.

Multi-District Manhunt and Security Lockdown

In response to the breach, police forces in neighbouring districts have been placed on maximum alert. Checkposts have been rapidly established at 16 strategic locations across the adjacent Dindigul district as a primary precautionary measure, according to Dindigul Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar.

Authorities have shared identifying details and photographs of the escaped individuals with police units across Idukki, Madurai, and Dindigul districts. Intensive vehicle inspections are currently underway on major arterial roads to intercept any movement.

Police confirmed that one of the 17 escaped prisoners has already been successfully apprehended during the initial combing operations. A formal case has been registered, and an exhaustive investigation is presently underway to determine lapses in security and trace the whereabouts of the remaining fugitives.
