Delhi Imposes Strict Entry Ban on Non-BS6 Vehicles Starting November 1 to Combat Winter Smog
Commuters entering Delhi from neighboring cities face rigorous vehicle emission checks and entry bans starting November 1 under new winter pollution rules.

New Transit Restrictions Take Effect
Commuters traveling into the national capital from neighboring cities including Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad are facing stringent travel restrictions. Under Delhi's comprehensive winter pollution-control measures, the administration has enforced a complete ban on the entry of non-Delhi-registered vehicles that fail to meet Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) emission norms.
According to official directives issued by the Delhi Government's Environment Department, these regulations will remain active through January 31, 2027, serving as a key pillar in the region's strategy to curb seasonal air quality degradation.
Permitted and Banned Vehicles
To manage vehicular emissions during the hazardous winter months, authorities have established clear guidelines regarding which categories of transport may access the capital.
Allowed Vehicles: - BS6-compliant private and commercial vehicles - Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles - Electric Vehicles (EVs) - Officially exempted government and emergency transport
Restricted Vehicles: - All non-BS6 compliant four-wheelers and transport vehicles - Interstate diesel buses operating below BS6 standards - Locally assembled utility vehicles, commonly known as "jugaad" - Agricultural tractors entering restricted zones
Mandatory PUCC Verification
Even vehicle owners possessing BS6-compliant automobiles are not exempt from verification protocols. All motorists must carry a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) upon entering Delhi. Traffic enforcement agencies have been instructed to conduct randomized checks at major border entry points to verify compliance.
Freight and Through-Traffic Regulations
In an effort to prevent heavy commercial vehicles from adding to the capital's congestion and pollution load, through-traffic guidelines have been tightened. Commercial trucks and goods carriers whose final destination is outside Delhi are strictly prohibited from entering the city limits. Instead, these vehicles must utilize the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, the Western Peripheral Expressway, or other designated bypass routes.
Public Health Objective
Environmental authorities stress that these rigorous interventions are critical during the winter season when weather patterns trap vehicular exhaust and regional stubble burning emissions, causing severe spikes in particulate matter across the National Capital Region (NCR). Daily News 365 will continue to monitor enforcement operations at key border checkpoints as the restrictions take full effect.
