Political Sparring Intensifies Ahead of UP Elections

LUCKNOW — With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections drawing closer, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi launched a scathing attack on Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav, suggesting that the party's name be altered to reflect dynastic and demographic dominance. Addressing a public rally in Kairana on Sunday, Owaisi targeted the SP leadership over what he termed a systematic sidelining of Muslim political representation in key constituencies.

Owaisi asserted that traditional strongholds of minority representation, such as Azamgarh and Firozabad, have been systematically co-opted by the party leadership's immediate family members.

"Akhilesh Yadav, the name of your party should be changed from Samajwadi to Samajwadi Yadav Parivar," Owaisi told the gathering. Pointing to the shifting political landscape, he noted that constituencies once won by Muslim leaders are now routinely contested and won by members of the SP chief's extended family.

The Muzaffarnagar Riots and Historical Grievances

Moving beyond contemporary electoral alignments, the AIMIM leader invoked the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, directly implicating the former Samajwadi Party administration led by Akhilesh Yadav as Chief Minister.

Owaisi alleged that approximately 50,000 residents were displaced from their homes during the communal violence, leaving families who had inhabited their ancestral villages for generations completely homeless. He further claimed that women and young girls were targeted during the unrest and that numerous children were orphaned while the state machinery failed to protect them.

"So tell me, the people of Muzaffarnagar and Kairana, isn't it true that when Akhilesh was the Chief Minister, right on this land, you, we, the world saw with our own eyes how the Muzaffarnagar riots happened?" Owaisi questioned.

Critique of Opposition Silence

The AIMIM chief widened his criticism to encompass broader opposition strategy in Uttar Pradesh, accusing secular and opposition parties of abandoning the core issues affecting minority communities and marginalized sections.

Owaisi alleged that under the current BJP-led government, minority religious structures such as mosques continue to face demolition threats, while coercive law enforcement tactics persist. He criticized mainstream opposition groups for maintaining a deliberate silence on these contentious issues.

The sharp rhetoric comes in the wake of stalled political negotiations. Earlier this month, Owaisi had floated the possibility of an electoral alliance with the Samajwadi Party to consolidate the anti-BJP vote and prevent the ruling party from securing a third consecutive term in Lucknow. However, with no formal progress on seat-sharing or coalition talks, relations between the two parties have noticeably deteriorated, setting the stage for a fragmented opposition front in the upcoming state elections.
