Administration Announces Formal Roadmap

NEW DELHI — In a significant development addressing long-standing student demands, the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) administration has formally announced a structured timeline for the restoration of its students' union. The move paves the way for an elected student body for the first time in nearly two decades, following weeks of intense agitation and protests on campus.

According to an official order issued by the Registrar’s Office, the constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union (JMISU) will be formally approved and implemented by May 15, 2027. Following this, democratic elections are slated to be held within approximately six weeks of the commencement of the new academic session, which is expected to begin around July 16, 2027.

Polling is anticipated to take place by mid-August 2027, fulfilling a core demand that had previously remained ambiguous in earlier administrative outreach attempts.

Withdrawal of Disciplinary Actions

Alongside the election schedule, the university administration has moved to de-escalate tensions by offering concessions to the student body. The latest order explicitly states that:

* All show-cause notices and disciplinary proceedings initiated against students participating in the recent protests will be withdrawn. * Pending orders regarding expulsions, suspensions, and campus entry restrictions will be immediately revoked. * Upon final approval of the union's constitution, a formal election notification will be issued in strict compliance with the Supreme Court-mandated Lyngdoh Committee guidelines.

The university has also appealed to the student community to completely call off the agitation and announced that regular classes and examinations will transition back to physical campus modes, ending the temporary online arrangements implemented during the peak of the protests.

History of the Stalled Process

Student union elections at Jamia Millia Islamia have remained suspended since 2006, when the administration dissolved the body following a series of violent incidents on campus. Subsequent attempts to revive the elections faced legal hurdles, notably a pending petition before the Delhi High Court from 2012 onward, though student bodies have frequently contested the administration's legal rationale.

The recent wave of protests gained momentum after parallel student movements emerged in neighboring central institutions, notably Aligarh Muslim University. Initial administrative offers made in late October were summarily rejected by protesting students due to open-ended timelines and conditional clauses requiring public apologies and the removal of social media content.

With the release of the updated, definitive roadmap, the university administration hopes to restore normalcy and academic continuity across the campus.
