Tragedy in Moga: Two Dead, Three Injured After Open Fire Attack Sparks Law and Order Debate in Punjab
Two men were killed and three others injured in a brazen daylight shooting in Punjab's Moga district, prompting sharp political backlash over rising violence.

Deadly Ambush Shakes Moga Neighborhood
A tragic shooting incident in Punjab's Moga district left two people dead and three others injured on Sunday, intensifying growing concerns over state security and escalating violent crime in the region.
The attack unfolded in the Angadpura neighbourhood when a black Mahindra Scorpio vehicle suddenly pulled up alongside a local shop. Occupants of the SUV opened indiscriminate fire on a group of men who were sitting outside. According to local law enforcement, the victims were caught completely off-guard by the assault.
Police identified the deceased victims as 30-year-old Gagan Jindal and 40-year-old Sahil Jindal. Four individuals sustained direct bullet injuries during the ambush, while a fifth victim was struck by flying bullet splinters. Emergency responders rushed the injured men to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Preliminary Investigation Points to Personal Enmity
Moga Police Chief Sartaj Singh Chahal confirmed that a specialized police team was dispatched to the crime scene immediately following distress calls. Forensic teams combed the area for physical evidence and shell casings as investigators began reviewing nearby security camera footage.
Initial findings from the preliminary investigation suggest that an old rivalry or personal enmity may have motivated the targeted attack. Police have launched a manhunt to trace the black Scorpio and apprehend the suspects involved.
Escalating Crime Wave Draws Political Flak
The bloodshed in Moga has triggered severe political fallout, with opposition leaders severely criticizing the Bhagwant Mann-led administration over a perceived collapse in the state's law and order machinery.
Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravneet Singh Bittu lashed out at the state government on social media, questioning the safety of ordinary citizens. He highlighted the apparent impunity with which criminals are operating across Punjab, contrasting the administration's promises of a peaceful state with the grim reality on the ground.
This incident follows a string of violent crimes reported across Punjab over the weekend. On Saturday morning, a gruesome murder in Ludhiana saw a man killed and his severed hand left in a plastic bag outside a grocery store after a violent home invasion. Just a day prior, a 27-year-old man was shot dead in Amritsar following a minor dispute over a parked scooter.
As public anxiety mounts, pressure is mounting on state authorities to restore order, dismantle criminal networks, and curb the unchecked proliferation of violence in local communities.
