Nationwide Backlash Follows Controversial Remarks

NEW DELHI — The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched coordinated nationwide protests on Monday, demanding the resignation and a public apology from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The demonstrations were triggered by an offensive remark made by Kharge regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public gathering in Patna.

During the event on Sunday, while responding to an audience member who asserted that Prime Minister Modi "would not go anywhere," Kharge used a derogatory phrase referencing the Prime Minister's late father, stating "Modi ka baap bhi jayega."

The comment instantly ignited a political firestorm, drawing sharp rebukes from senior cabinet ministers and party leaders across the country. In response, BJP workers mobilized at state headquarters and major urban hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, Patna, Ranchi, Bengaluru, and Jammu, staging rallies, burning effigies, and shouting slogans against the opposition leadership.

Condemnation from Cabinet Ministers

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep shock and dismay over the remarks, questioning the decorum expected from the leader of India's oldest political party.

"It's deeply distressing... What is most shocking about this entire episode is that these comments were not made by some ordinary Congress worker or a youth leader, but by the national president of a party that claims to be the oldest political party in the country," Singh stated during a media briefing.

The senior minister also criticized the broader Congress leadership for attempting to defend the statement rather than issuing an unqualified apology. "The Congress did not stop there; they are hurting people's sentiments by attempting to justify Kharge ji's words. Instead of acknowledging their mistake and expressing regret, the Congress is busy defending and validating this statement," he added.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi echoed similar sentiments, targeting both Kharge and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Joshi accused the opposition of eroding political discourse and Indian cultural values through continuous frustration and immaturity.

Counter-Arguments from Opposition Ranks

Defending the Congress chief, Karnataka minister and Kharge's son, Priyank Kharge, dismissed the protests as a manufactured controversy. He argued that the ruling party frequently distracts from substantive issues and has historically used harsh rhetoric of its own.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP and INDIA bloc ally Manoj Jha acknowledged that the phrasing used by Kharge was inappropriate, but criticized the political landscape for selective outrage. Jha pointed out that similar derogatory remarks directed at opposition leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge himself, have historically drawn little to no condemnation from the ruling establishment or certain media segments.

As demonstrations continue across multiple states, the political deadlock highlights the escalating friction between the ruling alliance and the opposition ahead of upcoming legislative sessions.
