Investigation Underway After Hundreds of Voter IDs Discovered

KHARGONE: In a bizarre and concerning development, authorities in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district have launched an inquiry after 343 voter identity cards were discovered abandoned along the banks of the Narmada River in Mandleshwar town.

The documents were initially uncovered by local residents who were participating in a routine riverbank cleanliness drive. Upon realizing that the items recovered from the silt and brush were official government-issued identification cards, citizens immediately alerted local administrative authorities. A video documenting the recovered cache subsequently circulated widely across social media platforms.

Preliminary administrative reviews suggest that the recovered cards belong to voters registered under the Rau assembly constituency, located in the neighboring Indore district.

Political Backlash and Demands for an Impartial Probe

The discovery has ignited immediate political friction in the region. District Congress President Ravi Naik, accompanied by a delegation of party workers, formally approached the Mandleshwar police station to submit a formal complaint demanding the immediate registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

Addressing the media, Naik strongly criticized the functioning of the election machinery and demanded strict accountability for the security lapse. The opposition party has also pressed for a thorough underwater search operation utilizing professional divers in the Narmada River to ascertain whether additional election documents or identification cards were discarded.

"The Congress will gherao the police station if an FIR is not registered," Naik warned, emphasizing the gravity of sensitive election materials turning up unsecured in a public water body.

Official Response

Local law enforcement and revenue officials have confirmed the seizure of the documents. Mandleshwar Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Shweta Shukla stated that the revenue department has successfully secured the recovered voter IDs.

"The revenue team has seized the cards, and the local police station in-charge has been formally directed to investigate the matter thoroughly. We have also received a formal complaint from the Congress party, and all angles of the incident are being examined," Shukla said.

As Daily News 365 continues to monitor this developing story, questions remain regarding how sensitive electoral documents belonging to a different district ended up abandoned along a remote riverbank.
