Priyanka Kharge Escalates Attack on RSS, Demands Official Registration and Financial Transparency
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has reignited a political firestorm by demanding that the RSS register as an NGO and open its financial books to public scrutiny.

Bengaluru Political Tensions Rise Over RSS Funding and Status
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge has sharply escalated his criticism of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), labeling the 100-year-old ideological parent of the BJP as a major threat to Indian democracy. Kharge's remarks come amid a broader political standoff following centenary celebrations and route marches held across Karnataka under heavy police security.
Speaking on the organizational structure and legal standing of the RSS, Kharge challenged the outfit to lead by example. He argued that despite functioning as a massive public-facing entity reaching millions of households, the organization operates outside the formal regulatory frameworks applied to other civic bodies.
The Demand for Formal Registration and Financial Accountability
Kharge specifically targeted the financial operations of the RSS, questioning the sources of its funding, expenditure tracking, and audit protocols. Pointing to the acronym of the organization, he remarked that formal registration is what the leadership truly fears because it invites transparency and legal accountability.
"You are the world's largest NGO, you are the biggest nationalist, the greatest people in the history of India, you should lead by example by following the rules, by adhering to the Constitution, register ho jao, bus," Kharge stated during his address, urging the organization to complete formal registration.
The state minister also questioned the cultural versus political nature of the RSS, pointing out that its leadership frequently comments on critical matters concerning national economics, foreign policy, and defense, while maintaining a non-governmental status.
Broader Political Fallout
The ongoing war of words between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP has intensified over recent days. Kharge's latest comments follow a controversial exchange initiated by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge during a public event in Bihar, which drew sharp rebuttals from BJP leaders across the country.
As political alignments harden in Karnataka over public assembly permissions and route marches, the debate surrounding the legal accountability, transparency, and public standing of ideological organizations like the RSS continues to dominate the state's political discourse.
