Punjab 2027: BJP Promises 63% Dearness Allowance for State Employees, Targeting AAP Government
The Punjab BJP has vowed to grant 63% Dearness Allowance to state employees and clear pending dues if voted to power in the 2027 Assembly elections.

Political Battlelines Drawn Over Employee Dues Ahead of 2027 Polls
CHANDIGARH — Intensifying political pressure on the ruling Aam Azad Party (AAP) administration in Punjab, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a major electoral pitch centered on employee welfare. Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon declared on Thursday that his party, if voted to power in the upcoming 2027 Assembly elections, will ensure a 63% Dearness Allowance (DA) for all state government employees, bringing them at par with central government standards.
The announcement comes in the wake of the central government’s decision to hike DA for central employees by 3%. Welcoming the Centre's move, Dhillon criticized the AAP government for lagging behind and failing to address the long-standing financial grievances of nearly eight lakh state employees and pensioners currently agitating across Punjab.
Mounting Pressure and Legal Scrutiny
The ongoing dispute over unpaid DA arrears has created severe administrative headwinds for the state government. Protests by state employees have paralyzed multiple departments, and the matter has escalated into a high-stakes legal battle.
On October 27, the Punjab and Haryana High Court took a stringent view of the matter, imposing a ₹1 lakh fine on the Punjab government over pending DA arrears. The court further directed Chief Secretary KAP Sinha to make a personal appearance on November 3. While the state administration has challenged the developments by filing a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court, the BJP claims the petition remains stalled on the defect list without an official hearing.
Beyond DA: Broadening the Campaign Focus
While employee welfare remains the central pillar of the BJP's current opposition strategy, Dhillon also highlighted broader economic and developmental initiatives proposed by the central government for Punjab. These include:
* Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme: Aimed at boosting industrial growth and exports in Jalandhar. * Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme: Designed to facilitate international trade for regional exporters. * Viksit Gram Swaraj Yojana: Targeted at comprehensive rural development across villages in Punjab.
Despite these multi-sector proposals, political analysts note that the immediate battleground remains rooted in governance accountability, judicial pressure, and the financial demands of the state's workforce as the 2027 electoral countdown begins.
